Pollution is something to consider if you live and work in a big city, especially if that city happens to be London. Just walking around here can leave you feeling a bit grubby at times, particularly if you’ve been on the Underground. When I get home I like to shower it all away. Showering twice a day is great if you want to feel fresh but I worry that it can disrupt the natural balance of the skin and strip it of its natural oils if I’m not careful so I’ve been looking at products that have been developed to tackle pollution, yet are still gentle.
Recently, I’ve started using some very nice bodycare products from Sûrface, a skincare brand that has been developed specifically for those of us living in the harsh environment of the city. Their unisex products are gentle but effective and are made with ingredients that are 99% natural and 1% nature-identical. They contain no alcohol, synthetic fragrance, beeswax, sodium lauryl sulfate, phenoxyethanol, petrochemicals, phthalates, parabans, synthetic colours, silicones, paraffins or formaldehyde. They don’t test on animals either, they’re dermatologically tested on sensitive skin. I’ve been enjoying their City Set #4 which consists of a body wash, body lotion and hand cream. All have a light, fresh citrus fragrance.
The body wash is a clear gel, that’s lightly viscous and leaves the skin feeling clean but not dry, it doesn’t strip everything away, like some. One of the key ingredients is camellia japonica flower extract, an ingredient that is renowned for its properties as an anti-pollutant and anti-oxidant that fights free radicals and gives high levels of hydration. It originates from Japan where it is also know as the Winter Rose due to its hardy nature, even blooming in the snow.
Once dry, I use the body lotion, it has a light texture and is quickly absorbed, so you can get dressed straightaway. It’s great for moisturising on hot days as it doesn’t block pores like some heavier creams. Like the body wash, it also contains camellia japonica flower extract. There’s also macadamia oil which is light-weight, easily absorbed and anti-inflammatory; and jojoba oil which contains vitamin E, is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, which makes it good for a lot of skin conditions.
The hand cream has become a handbag staple of mine. I get dry hands all the time (note to self: must drink more water) and always carry hand cream. This one contains meadowfoam seed oil an anti-oxidant that has skin softening benefits, and purple mangosteen extract which has anti-allergy, anti-inflammatory properties as well as being a powerful anti-oxidant. It’s non-greasy and suitable for all skin types, all climates and all cities, and at 75ml it’s perfect for travel.
