Un Rêve de Californie | Grazia France | February 2015

I’m sure you’ve also noticed that California is having a bit of a thing at the moment. This is more than likely due to the present renewed interest in all things 70s. Lots of designers have taken inspiration from the era, including The Row for their Pre Fall collection, who found inspiration in the California surf scene.

In this editorial for Grazia France, Van Mossevelde+N have captured a different side of California, instead of focusing on the big lights of Hollywood or the hippie beach scene they chose to shoot in a small town with a bit of a hicksville vibe. The model looks as though she doesn’t belong, maybe she’s passing-by during a road trip or on tour with the band. Tailoring just isn’t something I’d expect to see in this landscape and it’s this contrast that makes her stand out.

There are hints of red throughout the story which pull it together visually; a light here, a banquet, and a jacket there. Available lighting has been used cleverly – I’ve not seen strip lighting work so effectively before.

I’m ready, take me to California…
