If you’ve seen the Ridley Scott film, ‘A Good Year’ you’ll have picked up on the reference in my title; it’s one of my all time favourite films. For those of you who haven’t, Russell Crowe plays an arrogant investment banker who inherits his uncle’s dilapidated but charming château. Seeing the château as just another asset he can make money from he heads down to Provence to survey the property and get it valued. As the memories come flooding back of his childhood summers spent with his loving uncle, he starts to re-evaluate his life and consequently falls in love with Marion Cotillard’s character Fanny Chenal, a feisty beautiful local. I won’t spoil the end but I’m sure you can imagine what happens.

Some of the scenes in this film were shot in Gordes, a hilltop town with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. We visited La Bastide des Gordes Spa in the daytime (another potential venue for our wedding), sipped a delicious cold glass of Viognier on their terrace before heading to our similarly dilapidated but charming château (to the one in the film), Le Château de la Pioline. Truly living the dream!
