Time To Slow Down with C.P. Hart

The latest addition to our house is a new roll top bath from C.P. Hart. We finally have a bath, it’s only taken us 7 years!

At the beginning of the year I wrote a post about my New Year Intentions, one of which was to slow down. Learning when to slow down (especially when you live in a city like London) is an important skill to hone, and one that often takes time to acquire. I’ve lived in London for around 12 years and it’s only now that I truly appreciate the need. Life can pass you by in a flash, so it’s important to take your time to appreciate the simple things. Whether that’s reading a book/magazine/newspaper whilst sitting in a favourite café and sipping on a freshly made coffee. Or taking a walk in a local park/favourite part of town/the countryside and enjoying taking everything in without an alternative agenda. Or (for me) slipping into a deep bath scented with my favourite bath oil (currently Olverum) whilst listening to calming music.

Pregnancy really forced me to slow down, I would get tired after the least taxing of activities and, as the months wore on, I got more and more achey as my ligaments softened. Getting our new bath from C.P. Hart was an absolute game-changer. Barely a day went by when I was pregnant that I didn’t take a dip in it, whether that was to soothe my aches and pains or to chill out from the insane heatwave. There’s nowhere I felt more relaxed and would happily wallow away an hour.

There’s not a lot of time for me to wallow these days but I still grab a bath whenever I can, the pregnancy aches have been replaced by back and shoulder aches from carrying my gorgeous little girl around (she’s now 6.5kg). Little Isabelle, on the other hand, uses it daily as part of her bedtime routine.

You might be wondering why it took us 7 years to get a bath. When we bought our house we completely gutted the kitchen and bathroom, removing the floor in-between and the ceiling above. This hadn’t been our plan but that’s what you get when you buy an old Victorian cottage with character. This, sadly, used up our budget and we just couldn’t afford the dreamy cast iron roll top bath I had planned for. Fast-forward 7 years and it’s been worth the wait, I couldn’t be happier with our beautiful bath, it’s just the right size and fits in perfectly, bringing together the old character of our Victorian house with my minimal style.

Just before the bump got too big I was on my hands and knees priming and painting the bath, a week later and the bump was too big and I wouldn’t have been able to. I used Johnstone’s Anti-Rust Metal Primer in Red Oxide and Farrow & Ball Estate Eggshell in Off-Black No.57. I used two coats of the primer and then two coats of the top coat. The 750ml pots of each were more than enough.

C.P. Hart were the obvious choice for me, they’ve been around for over 75 years, are well known for producing high quality products and work with some incredible designers (including Alessi and Philippe Starck). I can’t fault them on quality, our bath has been very well made and will be here for many years, long after we’ve moved on. It’s given our bathroom a stunning focal-point and finally it feels complete.

Minimal Souvenirs From Stockholm

Souvenirs are always such a lovely reminder of a great trip. Earlier in the year I visited Stockholm with Sachajuan, and being a bit of a Scandiphile it was a great excuse to pick up a few things to bring home. I found the perfect minimal souvenirs from Stockholm, made by some fantastic Swedish brands, all beautifully designed, of course. Almost all of them are under 100ml or small in size and weight (except the Byredo room spray which you can pick up in duty free at the airport), so all perfect for carry-on luggage.

There’s a lovely story behind Iris Hantverk, their beautiful brushes are made according to an old Swedish tradition by visually impaired craftsmen from different cultures. The quality is exceptional and this is definitely just the start of my collection. They do make some other amazing homewares too, including soft furnishings and cleaning products.

I’ve written about Sachajuan a few times (their haircare products are my favourite) and you’re probably quite familiar with the brand now. Their Ocean Mist Texturising Spray is their bestseller and one I’ve not mentioned before. It’s perfect for those who like a more textured, beachy style.

Byredo is one of those brands that in my mind gets it all right, from the packaging and branding to the contents of their slick bottles, I love it all! The Cotton Poplin room spray is new to the collection, evolving from the ever popular candles. It has a fresh scent, think clean sheets with touches of blue chamomile, linen, white cedarwood and sweet musk.

Whilst in Stockholm I dropped into the studio/shop of TID (Swedish for ‘time’) and had a lovely chat with Ola about the brand and what it’s like living and working in Stockholm. The space is small but stunning with shelves and tables all made from Dinesen‘s Douglas Fir floorboards. I was so inspired.

L:a Bruket may have made its way over to the UK in the last couple of years but that’s no reason not to appreciate it in its home country. I’m funny in that I really like to buy things from where they come from or were made, it gives them a little extra something. The 092 hand cream is another bestseller and I can understand why given its lovely scent of sage, rosemary and lavender. They also do a smaller 30ml size, perfect for handbags.

Granit is a sort of cross between Muji and IKEA, filled with minimal functional products for the home, at a reasonable price. The only thing that stopped me from taking half the shop home was that my luggage was already jam-packed (I even got a heavy label at the airport).

Christmas Gift Guide: For Him 2017

Christmas is just around the corner and I’m finally thinking about gift ideas. I always aim to buy presents that are useful. Unless I know someone needs something specific, I try to keep it quite simple. I love to buy things that people can eat, drink or use in the home, as I know they’re not likely to go to waste.

Gestalten Small Homes, Grand Living – Interior Design for Compact Spaces Book | 5. Iris Hantverk Shoehorn | 6. Murmur Speck Throw in Grey, White & Black | 7. Native Union Lightning Cable Collection | 8. Moleskine Wine Journal | 9. Muuto Corky Carafe | 10. Willow Organic Men’s Shower Set | 11. Sunspel Pima Cotton Lounge Pants in Navy | 12. Sunspel Cotton Cellulock Long Sleeve T-Shirt in Navy | 13. ferm LIVING Brass Semicircle Stand | 14. ARKET Vetiver Hand Wash 500ml | 15. Toast Christmas Hamper | 16. PB 0110 CM39 Coin Case in Black | 17. Herbivore Beard Tonic Sampler

Toast‘s Christmas hamper contains enough goodies to keep most men happy, at least until the start of the new year. There are some things I know will always go down well. Most men will not be disappointed to receive a watch for Christmas, as long as it’s a classic style and I think Cate & Nelson make some pretty awesome watches. They’re great value as the quality is very good, with supple leather straps and Swiss movements. Loungewear has come a long way in the last few years, it’s much smarter and much more comfortable, perfect for those lazy Sundays on the sofa. I love the soft cotton of Sunspel and have my eye on so many pieces from new menswear label, Prévu (I may end up having to steal anything I do buy, so naughty). If anyone else finds their man “borrowing” their phone charger cable on a regular basis Native Union have some very nice designs that he’ll know are his (or ask for a set yourself so that he can’t suggest it’s his). Hopefully there’s something in my list that will be a good fit or will inspire you to buy something nice for the men in your life. I’ve only selected pieces from brands that I believe produce good quality products. Happy shopping.
