Soma Rituals Gua Sha Facial Fusion Treatment

This post was created in collaboration with Soma Rituals.

Self-care comes in many forms and is often different for each of us; what we need can change from day to day, even from hour to hour. Listening to our bodies is key to understanding what we need.

Occasionally, I put my self-care needs in the hands of others; every couple of months, I book a treatment with an experienced therapist. It may seem indulgent to some but if it’s something I know will benefit me, isn’t that a good investment of my time and money? The type of treatment I choose and the therapist that performs it have a huge impact on how beneficial it is. Before I book anything I consider what it is I feel I’m lacking, I research different treatments, read about the therapists that perform them and ask questions. This way, when the treatment is over, I come away feeling good about the time and money I have invested.

I recently visited Chandra Casali-Bell, the talented therapist behind Soma Rituals, in her Marylebone treatment room. Chandra takes a holistic approach to her clients’ wellbeing. The light and airy, therapeutic space helped me begin to relax as soon as I stepped through the door. The room is comfortably warm, decorated in natural tones, with lots of plants and a few well-chosen decorative details. A candle burns with a pleasant relaxing scent and light floods the room from the large sash window.

Chandra and I talk about the treatment she has recommended for me, a Gua Sha Facial Fusion with Thai herbal poultice. The treatments she currently practices have been taught to her by internationally-renowned, US educator Cecily Braden. Cecily spent decades training with various Thai Masters and Indonesian Healers, learning their techniques and developing her therapies. Chandra lets me know there is a carafe of water and a glass for me, before leaving the room to allow me time to get ready.

As I lay on the bed trying to let go of all the thoughts passing through my busy mind, there is a knock and Chandra enters the room. She tells me that she doesn’t intend to talk to me much throughout the treatment, so that I can focus on using the time to fully relax and feel taken care of. Just as I’ve experienced at the start of many yoga and meditation classes, she reminds me that this time is for me, that thoughts of other things may come up, to try to acknowledge them and then let them go; a reminder I’m grateful for.

The treatment begins with Chandra’s warm soft hands massaging my face with an oil cleanser. Her light but firm touch gently caresses my face, neck and the upper section of my décolletage. She gently removes the cleanser and follows it with a balm cleanser and then a lighter, oil cleanser. All of the products she uses contain only natural ingredients and smell incredible. A hot towel opens the pores and removes any remaining product from my skin.

By this point I’m feeling incredibly relaxed. Chandra begins to massage my face with a heated Thai herbal poultice; containing organic healing botanical ingredients such as hibiscus, lemongrass, ginger, java apple leaf, and more. The poultice warms the muscles, helps to release tension and detoxify the skin. Chandra combines acupressure and lymphatic drainage massage to help reduce swelling and dark circles, and improve nutrition to the skin, as well as lifting and contouring. It’s hard to tell that she’s using a poultice and I mistake it for one of the gua sha tools I saw on the side before my treatment started; it feels smooth, hard and hot, reminiscent of the stones used in the hot stone therapies I’ve had in the past. The heat feels incredible on my tense muscles.

Chandra then moves on to use her gua sha tools; these beautiful, professional tools are made from high-quality gem stones. She chooses and uses the various different shapes and stones based on my specific needs. She massages my face with each, helping to release congestion in the connective tissue, renew lymph fluid, activate circulation, release tension in the muscles and stimulate cell activity. Her movements are sometimes small and precise, other times the gua sha tools glide across my face. It all becomes a bit blurry as the rhythmic massage sends me into an incredibly relaxed state.

Just when I think it can’t get any better, Chandra gives me a Thai Wai Facial Massage – to reinforce the benefits of the treatment so far. She uses her hands, feeling deep into the skin, moving and draining the lymph, improving the health of the skin and sculpting my face, as she does so. She follows the massage with a beautiful herbal face mask and head massage, releasing the tension around my hairline and scalp.

I come around feeling utterly cared for, in a way that I had forgotten was possible in my 40s. Chandra’s treatments are precise, prescriptive, and intuitively practised in an incredibly compassionate way. She gives you the time and space to stop and allow yourself to rest and feel restored. When I take a look in the mirror, my face has a golden dewy glow and there’s something more youthful about it. I leave feeling re-energised and so grateful for the experience. It was unlike any treatment I’ve had before and I think that is largely due to Chandra herself, and the care and energy she has so generously shared with me.

I had the Balancing Herbal Ritual, a 90-minute Gua Sha Facial Fusion therapy. It took place in Soma Rituals’ treatment room in Marylebone, London (Soma Rituals has since moved to Edinburgh). Please contact Chandra for further details, or book a treatment online.

d’still Products

During the treatment Chandra used products containing only natural ingredients from the British skincare brand, d’still.

The Last Drop: No.1

I appreciate that lots of you are interested in finding out about the latest skincare products and whether they might be good for your skin. I’m lucky to be in a position in which I regularly try lots of different products. I avoid skincare products with known nasties, looking instead for those that are ethically and sustainably made, predominantly made with organic and/or natural ingredients. My approach is to use each product for at least a month before I share my experience here or on Instagram. After that initial trial period there are some that I continue to use every day or when appropriate, and others I give to friends and family. So, with that in mind, I thought it might be interesting for you to read about the products that are so good I’ve used every last drop, my latest empties. Below are the products I’ve just finished. They are all products I confidently recommend to friends and family, and feel confident recommending to you.

Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream

Even when I’m using another eye cream, I will almost certainly have a bottle of Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream* in my bathroom cabinet. It’s the one I rely on when my skin is feeling particularly sensitive. It contains a super fine low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and chamomile; meaning it’s great for dryness, puffiness, fine lines and sensitive skin. It’s also said to reduce dark circles thanks to witch hazel but I can’t speak from experience. The texture is more serum than cream, it spreads easily and is absorbed quickly. It’s great value and widely available.

AMLY Radiance Boost Face Mist

AMLY Radiance Boost Face Mist* didn’t last long in my bathroom, I found myself using it all the time – not just after cleansing but throughout the day to refresh my skin and give it a boost of moisture.

It is a light, refreshing mist that’s a bit of an all-rounder thanks to a great combination of ingredients. Among other things, it’s infused with the healing properties of silver, deeply moisturising hyaluronic acid and a probiotic lactobacillus ferment to feed the skin’s microbiome. I’m going to need a bigger bottle next time!

Seed to Skin The Midnight Miracle

Since researching face oils and their benefits for a previous post, I’ve made them a consistent part of my regimen, both morning and night. Seed to Skin The Midnight Miracle Cell Recovery Night Oil* is one of the most visibly efficacious face oils I’ve used. When I woke after the first night I used it I could see that my skin appeared more even in tone, and it felt more supple and nourished.

It contains vitamins A and E which increase skin turnover and cell regeneration. 70% of the oil comes from three types of rose seed, which give support to the cells in all three layers of the skin; the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.

Volition Celery Green Cream

Volition Celery Green Cream* is more gel than cream. I first used it as a face cream, after applying my face oils but I quickly worked out that it was much more effective when used after my water-based serums and before face oils. It then became a bit of a game-changer, a serious moisture-booster.

The combination of celery seed extract and hyaluronic acid, along with cucumber and lavender extract makes for an incredibly refreshing, lightweight moisturiser; ideal for dry, sensitive skin.

Seed to Skin The Biom’Sphere

Another unbelievably good product from Seed to Skin, The Biom’Sphere* has been created to nourish the skin’s microbiome. It can become imbalanced due to frequent washing, pollution, preservatives from cosmetic products and strong sun irradiation; potentially causing the skin to become red, acne-prone, dry, excessively oily or itchy.

The Biom’Sphere contains pre-, pro- and post-biotics, black bee honey, pseudoalteromonas exopolysaccharides, hyaluronic acids of two different molecular weights and an oxygen complex.

Susanne Kaufmann Oil Bath For The Senses

There’s always a bottle of Susanne Kaufmann Oil Bath For The Senses by my bath. It’s my favourite bath oil when I need to slow down and relax. The soothing scents of ylang-ylang, patchouli and lavender fill the air as you pour it into the water, creating just the right atmosphere. It doesn’t leave an oily residue on the skin but does leave it feeling soft and nourished. There’s also the added benefit of rosemary which promotes blood circulation and boosts the skin’s metabolism. Sugarcane bagasse and corncob hydrate the skin.

I plan to make ‘The Last Drop’ a regular feature on Style&Minimalism. Please let me know via email or an Instagram DM if you found this article useful or if you have any questions about the latest empties I’ve featured.

The Nourishing Benefits of Face Oils

I use face oils throughout the year but I think they are essential during the colder months because of their deeply nourishing and protective properties. When skin is exposed to central heating and/or the wind it can lose the protective layer of oils and lipids it makes naturally, that form part of the skin’s barrier. (It’s important to note that some cleansers also strip away this layer of oils and lipids.) Without this protective layer the skin is open to water loss and can become dry and fragile. As we age, our skin naturally produces less of these oils and lipids. Face oils help to replenish them and protect the skin.

Face oils give skin a smoother texture, plumping it up and making it feel more supple and elastic. The outer layer of the epidermis, called the stratum corneum, is made up of corneocytes (mostly keratin) and an intercellular lipid matrix of ceramides, fatty acids and sterols. The lipid matrix forms a barrier to keep out bacteria and toxins, and prevents water loss. Face oils contain lots of fatty acids which support the lipid matrix; boosting the naturally occurring ceramides, fatty acids and sterols with additional plant-based ones; some also contain beneficial tocopherols (vitamin E), phenols, carotenes, squalane, vitamin A, vitamin C, folic acid, B vitamins, and flavonoids. The best oils are those that are extracted in a gentle manner, therefore retaining many of the beneficial compounds they contain; cold-pressing is one of the best known techniques.

You might think that face oils are only suitable for those with dry or dehydrated skin but all skin types can benefit. Face oils have different properties depending on what they contain. Natural face oils contain fixed ( AKA carrier) oils, often combined with essential oils and/or oil-soluble herbal extracts. The combination and quantity of each fixed oil greatly affects the properties of the face oil. Different types of fatty acid within plant-based oils have different properties; some are moisturising, whilst others are considered non-drying, semi-drying or drying. When skin becomes oily or dry it is because it is out of balance.

Oils rich in linoleic acid are good for oily and acne-prone skin types. Oils containing high levels of linoleic acid include: argan oil, borage seed oil, black currant seed oil, cranberry seed oil, evening primrose oil, hemp seed oil, grape seed oil, pumpkin seed oil, raspberry seed oil, rosehip seed oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, and sweet almond oil.

Oils rich in oleic acid are good for dry or ageing skin. Oils containing high levels of oleic acid include: apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, moringa oil, olive oil, palm kernel oil, sea buckthorn oil, shea butter, and tamanu oil.

The size of the molecules in the oil, their molecular weight, affect how deeply they penetrate the skin. On the whole, the smaller the molecule size the deeper they go. These smaller molecules don’t clog pores but quickly sink into the skin.

Essential oils and oil-soluble herbal extracts bring additional benefits to face oils. For example, Anthemis Nobilis (Roman Chamomile) flower oil is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, good for calming acne. Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) leaf extract has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Calendula Officinalis (Marigold) flower extract has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Taraxacum Officinale (Dandelion) leaf extract is rich in antioxidants and prevents UVB damage. Some essential oils may cause irritation, if you have a reaction to a face oil it’s best to stop using it.

The main function of a face oil is to help the skin retain hydration (rather than provide it) and they are, therefore, best used in combination with a humectant (that draws in water) like hyaluronic acid. This is why it’s important to use face oils after water-based mists and serums (to help seal in their beneficial properties). Place a few drops of oil in the palm of your hand, gently rub your palms together to warm the oil, then pat and push the oil into your skin.

I suggest looking for natural, plant-based, cold-pressed oils; with a low comedogenic rating (meaning they don’t clog pores), especially if you suffer from acne. Cosmetic grade mineral oil has been found to be non-comedogenic but it is not sustainable since it is made from highly refined and processed petroleum. Dark glass bottles are best for storing oils as exposure to light and heat will damage the oil.

Nourishing Natural Face Oils

I have been using these ten natural plant-based face oils over the last couple of months. None have caused me any irritation and all of them have had a positive effect on my skin.

Safe Sun Protection, Every Day

Sun protection is something we should all use daily, rain or shine. I used to think it was only needed on bright, sunny days but UVA and some UVB rays travel through clouds and cause ageing (UVA) and sunburn (UVB) no matter what the weather. UVA rays can also travel through glass.

I’ve been looking into options that fit seamlessly into my routine. In the past I’ve found that some sunscreens have left me feeling as though my make-up is sliding off my face, before I’ve even left the house. What I want from a sun care product is to not notice it’s there but know it’s keeping my skin protected.

I’m cautious about what I put on my skin as it gets absorbed into the body. I’ve spent time looking into what ingredients are best avoided. I mentioned a couple (oxybenzone and octinoxate) in a previous post, Clean Suncreens. Also, oxybenzone, octinoxate, butylparaben and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor are all known to cause damage and bleaching to coral reefs. In my opinion, it’s best to look for natural, mineral-based, physical sun protection; products that use either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide in a non-nano molecule form. This is because they’re considered safer for humans and safer for the environment. Physical sun protection sits on the skin rather than being absorbed by it, it forms a physical barrier; though it is still possible that other ingredients within the product may be absorbed.

I’ve been trying out a few products that are new to me, to get a feel for what works well within my current skincare routine, with my fairly sensitive skin. I layer quite a few products these days and don’t find it problematic. I know some people may struggle with layering but it’s all about the products you use and the order in which you apply them (I’ll save that for another post). I should add that, currently, I wear very little make-up and prefer a fresh dewy look.

Sun protection should be an important layer in your routine, it’s not one to skip.

Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 30

I’ve been using Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 30 since they discontinued another great product I used for a year or two, previously (Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturizer). The new serum is a bit of a wonder product; combining skincare, make-up and sun protection in one. It’s perfect for lazy days or people who prefer to use as few products as possible. It has a sheer finish, evening out skin tone but doesn’t completely cover up dark spots. It has a fluid texture, more akin to a serum or face oil, and leaves the skin well moisturised and incredibly dewy. It isn’t a product I would use just before a photo shoot, simply because it leaves the skin quite shiny. It’s a very easy everyday product that saves time.

Ilia are careful about the ingredients they use, they believe “that not every natural ingredient is good for the skin, nor is every synthetic bad. Clean beauty is where those two collide—with conscious, carefully-selected ingredients, and no compromises”.

The key ingredients in Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 30 are niacinamide (vitamin B3), plant-based squalane and hyaluronic acid. The natural sun protection comes from zinc oxide and gives protection from UVA, UVB and UVC rays, blue light and infrared light.

Seed to Skin The Eclipse SPF 30

For something a little simpler but no less effective, I think Seed to Skin The Eclipse SPF 30* is a fantastic sun protection product, which also guards against environmental pollution. You apply a few drops to your face and neck, after your regular moisturiser. It feels like a thin face oil and leaves the skin very dewy. It has a slightly pale caste when you apply it, which quickly disappears.

“Seed to Skin goes beyond the trend of purely natural, combining the power of nature’s curative properties with the results-driven efficiency of advanced science.”

The ingredients in Seed to Skin The Eclipse are 100% natural. Sun protection comes from titanium dioxide (another physical sunscreen agent) which protects against UVA and UVB rays, as well as environmental pollution.

Balance Me Natural Protection Moisturiser SPF 25

Balance Me Natural Protection Moisturiser SPF 25 is a moisturiser with the added benefit of an SPF. I like a multi-functional product due to its ease of use and because it saves time; with this product it’s also much harder for you to forget or skip using an SPF. It’s a fairly thick cream that goes on easily. It leaves a slight white cast that disappears within a few minutes of application. If you’re applying make-up, I would give it 10 minutes to settle fully.

Balance Me “genuinely fail to see why people would choose synthetic over natural when clinically proven bio-active ingredients exist and work”.

Balance Me Natural Protection Moisturiser SPF 25 is a vegan-friendly product. The key ingredients are hyaluronic acid and rose hip. Hyaluronic acid is deeply moisturising and replenishes the hyaluronic acid that’s found naturally in the skin. It works by drawing in moisture and therefore keeps the skin hydrated and plump. Rose hip is rich in naturally occurring vitamin A, an excellent anti-ageing ingredient. Sun protection comes from titanium dioxide, protecting against UVA and UVB rays.

Pai British Summer Time: Sensitive Sunscreen SPF 30

Pai British Summer Time: Sensitive Sunscreen SPF 30* (previously Hello Sunshine) is the one I would recommend for those with particularly sensitive skin. Pai’s founder, Sarah, struggled so much with other skincare products and created the brand because she couldn’t find any that didn’t irritate her skin. It smells incredibly fresh and a little goes a long way. The pale yellow cream quickly vanishes to leave an invisible, non-shiny finish.

Pai believe “the highest quality organic ingredients create the best performing products – it’s a simple equation”.

Pai British Summer Time: Sensitive Sunscreen SPF 30 is 99% natural and vegan-friendly. Key ingredients include cotton extract and vitamin E. Cotton extract (AKA gossypium herbaceum) is an active botanical that helps protect skin from oxidative damage caused by UVA, UVB, infrared and visible radiation. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that offers significant protection against UVB rays. Sun protection comes from zinc oxide and protects against UVA and UVB rays, blue light and infrared light.

NUORI Mineral Defence Sunscreen SPF 30

If you’re looking for something incredibly fresh, there’s NUORI Mineral Defence Sunscreen SPF 30*. All skincare products lose their efficacy over time, NUORI’s approach is to offer the freshest skincare, made in small batches, to be used as soon as you receive them.

I particularly love the texture of this product, it’s quite thick but smoothes over the skin so easily and doesn’t leave any white residue. It has a slightly pink colour which may be why it’s less visible than some of the others. Along with PAI’s, this leaves the most natural finish.

“All NUORI formulas are developed to deliver visible results using only the best natural ingredients and the latest generation of bioengineered actives.”

NUORI Mineral Defence Sunscreen SPF 30 is an all-natural formula. Its key ingredients are French maritime pine extract and sunflower seed oil. French maritime pine extract is one of those miracle ingredients that has multiple health benefits that include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties. Sunflower seed oil is a great source of omega-6 fatty acids, great for promoting a healthy skin barrier, reducing inflammation and increasing cell renewal. Sun protection comes from zinc oxide and gives protection from UVA and UVB rays.

NUORI Sun Repair Serum* isn’t a sun protection product but as it works so well alongside their Mineral Defence Sunscreen to reduce skin damage, I’ve included it.

This serum is so refreshing, you can feel it working hard to replenish lost moisture, as soon as you apply it. Natural hyaluronic acid and carbohydrate complex have water-binding properties which help draw moisture into the skin and keep it moisturised. The skin’s natural response when damaged by the sun is inflammation; this serum contains plant-based, bio-fermented sorbitol complex and chamomile flower to help reduce inflammation and irritation, quickly helping to calm the skin. There’s also liquorice root extract and vitamins C and E to help neutralise damaging free radicals, with their potent doses of antioxidants.

REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30

If shine is something you try to avoid then REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30*, with its mattifying properties would be a good one for you. It does leave skin a touch paler but if you’re applying make-up afterwards then you won’t notice.

REN say, “‘Clean’ is at the heart of all we do… But what does it mean? For us it’s giving you visible results from skincare that isn’t full of shady ingredients. Ingredients that work with your skin, without causing irritation. Ingredients your skin would choose, from sustainable sources and sustainably packaged – cause great skincare shouldn’t cost the earth, right?”

REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30 has a naturally-derived formula, that’s vegan-friendly. Key ingredients are yellow passion fruit seed extract (a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin from pollution and free radical damage) and rice starch (which absorbs excess oil whilst soothing any irritation). Sun protection comes from zinc oxide and gives protection from UVA and UVB rays, and blue light.

Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are currently considered to be elite sunscreens. They both give good broad spectrum coverage (meaning they protect against UVA, UVB and UVC rays) and are highly stable (unlike avobenzone AKA butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, an incredible UVA sunscreen agent that’s, sadly, not photostable and degrades in the sunlight). The downside is that they are hard to spread on the skin but when combined with the right ingredients that’s not usually a problem with the end product.

Please bear in mind that, no matter which product you choose to use, you will need to reapply it throughout the day to a maintain a good level of protection from the sun’s rays.

Organic & Natural Skincare Brands On A Budget

I was originally going to call this post ‘Affordable Organic & Natural Skincare Brands’ but affordability is personal, not dependent on the size of your income but how you choose to spend it. My approach to affordable skincare is to find products that are effective for my dry, sensitive skin; that don’t expose it to unnecessary chemicals; and I wouldn’t consider buying simply as a treat.

I know that some of the beauty products I write about could be considered a little on the expensive side. I don’t believe cost is a sign of a product’s efficacy. There are a lot of overpriced brands on the market that seriously under-deliver. When I feature a more expensive product, it’s because I believe it’s worth spending money on and because it’s a product that works for me. I believe it’s important to invest in my skin.

There are a lot of brands that could easily charge a lot more for their brilliant products. There are some great natural and organic skincare brands that suit most budgets. In this post, I’m sharing a few of the most reliable and affordable brands I use.

REN Clean Skincare

REN Clean Skincare is probably the skincare brand I’ve used for the longest, of all the brands I recommend in this post. I can always rely on their products to be efficacious, whilst also being gentle on my skin (all their formulas are pH balanced). It was the gentleness of their products that first attracted me. When I was at university I became aware that my skin was becoming quite sensitive, probably as a result of my less than healthy lifestyle. It was at this time, I discovered REN.

Their ingredients come from sustainable sources, and are chosen for their effectiveness and because they don’t cause irritation to the skin; like the blackcurrant seed oil (an oil rich in Omega 3) in their Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Milk, and the wheatgerm (which increases skin firmness) in their V-Cense Revitalising Night Cream. Both of which I’ve used for years.

I also love REN for their positive approach to social projects. Their ‘Clean to Skin, Clean to Planet’ initiative is part of their pledge to become zero waste by 2021. Campaigns in partnership with Surfers Against Sewage and Surfrider Foundation have seen groups around the UK and USA cleaning up our beaches. They currently use post-consumer-recycled plastic for their tubes, all designed for circular recycling; and they teamed up with TerraCycle to create their ocean plastic bottles. Their next step, refillable bottles in co-ordination with TerraCycle’s Loop program.

REN products are all cruelty-free; some are also vegan. All products are manufactured in the UK.

If you sign up to their newsletter you’ll receive 15% off your first order.

PAI Skincare

It was Julia Rebaudo from Stylonylon that introduced me to PAI Skincare, back in 2017. She had visited their factory in London (where they make all their products) and, knowing we both share a love of natural skincare, suggested I try them.

I met up with their PR and over a lovely lunch she told me about founder, Sarah Brown’s, struggle to find products that were gentle enough for her irritated, hyper-sensitive and acne-prone skin. Finding nothing that worked for her, she created her own.

Sarah’s approach is to use natural and organic ingredients in their products, reducing the use of chemicals that may cause irritation. They don’t use any controversial chemicals, parabens or phthalates. In order to qualify as natural, a minimum of 98% of the ingredients come from nature; certified to a Soil Association COSMOS Natural standard. Where possible they use organic ingredients, which they (and I) believe are better for our health and the environment. Any non-natural ingredients they use in their products are those necessary to keep it fresh or make it work. They meet strict standards, green chemistry principles and don’t exceed 2% of the product’s ingredients.

PAI products are so gentle, they’ve never caused my skin any irritation, but have also given me good results. When my pores are blocked (after cleansing), I use their Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator. The natural and bio-degradable jojoba beads remove dead skin cells. I then follow this with their Copaiba Deep Cleanse AHA Mask to remove congestion. My skin is left feeling super clean but not tight or uncomfortable.

PAI take their social responsibilities seriously. Sarah’s mentorship program educates young girls in London, in entrepreneurship and the career opportunities in manufacturing. In addition, they work closely with a few cancer centres, offering cancer sufferers skincare advice throughout their treatment and after.

Balance Me

Just like myself, Rebecca and Clare Hopkins are on a mission to slow down and take care of themselves. Like a lot of us, they found the fast pace of twenty-first century life stressful and realised that it was taking its toll on their health and skin. Both sisters had developed incredibly sensitive, red skin and were suffering from hormonal breakouts. They decided to create Balance Me, skincare products that enable us all to take a little time for self-care each day. They create natural products from sustainable, renewable ingredients that are kind to your skin and the earth. Some products do contain non-natural ingredients but these are carefully selected and tested to ensure they are safe for your skin.

As with the other brands I’ve mentioned, Balance Me’s products are gentle but effective. Their Tri-Molecular Hyaluronic Serum is one of the most effective and affordable hyaluronic serums I’ve come across. It contains three different molecule sizes that act on different layers of the epidermis, giving skin a thorough moisture boost. I use it morning and night.

Balance Me are making every effort to reduce the environmental impact of their packaging. They use clear and white glass for most of their bottles, since it is the most widely and infinitely recycled material available. However, being heavier than some materials, it does have an impact on carbon emissions. For safety, balms and oils are packaged in plastic, they use 50% post-consumer recycled plastic for them. All their boxes are made with FSC-certified card and if you order from them directly your package will be packed with corn chips, a biodegradable padding material that you can dissolve in water or put on your compost heap. They’re looking into refillables for the future.

Balance Me products are all cruelty-free; some are also vegan. All products are manufactured in the UK.

Susanne Kaufmann Pollution Skin Defense System

Susanne Kaufmann Pollution Skin Defence System* | MENU Gridy Me Mirror in Natural Oak

Coinciding with the 15th Anniversary of Susanne Kaufmann (the beauty brand) they have released the Pollution Skin Defense System, a treatment that consists of 15 x 2ml ampules, to be used over 15 days. The system has been developed to combat skin against pollution. It is widely known that stressed skin ages prematurely, this can be caused by pollution from exhaust fumes; as well as short-wave, blue light from smartphones and computer screens.

There are three types of ampule within the system, each has been developed to improve the condition of pollution-effected skin using natural ingredients, whilst also stimulating the skin’s own mechanisms.

Before living in London I had clear skin; I believe pollution is a real issue for me and that my skin has suffered because of it. Over the last three weeks, I’ve given the Pollution Skin Defense System a try, to see if it will improve the condition my skin.

Ampules 1-5, Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most effective antioxidants. It’s oxidation that causes cells to breakdown, which occurs when free radicals in the environment attack the cells. Vitamin C counteracts this process by eliminating inflammatory processes. It stimulates the skin’s defense mechanism as well as freeing the skin’s detoxification pathways. The Vitamin C face serum contains three main active ingredients; URBALYS, Pentylene Glycol and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid. URBALYS is a natural anti-pollution active ingredient, extracted from the red Schisandra berry. Pentylene Glycol is a natural ingredient derived from sugar can bagasse and corn; it binds water in the skin and inhibits the growth of microorganisms on the skin. 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid is modified vitamin C, as well as being an antioxidant, it prolongs the storage of moisture within the skin and has a lightening effect.

For the first five days I massaged the Vitamin C face serum into my skin every evening, after cleansing. After the first three nights I woke up with small clusters of tiny pimples around my mouth, chin and nose; I guess as a result of the detoxification pathways being opened up. My face was a little bumpy in texture and the tone appeared more uneven than usual but I persevered since something was clearly happening.

Ampules 6-10, Ectoin

Ectoin is a natural molecule derived from halophilic bacteria Halomonas elongata. It stabilises cell membranes and lipids, protecting against harmful environmental influences and prevents premature cell damage. It also increases the storage capacity of moisture within the skin. Alongside ectoin, the ampule also contains QT 40, a combination of glycerin, water and hydrolysed Sea Lettuce (Ulva Lactuca) Extract. The QT 40 stimulates the production of the skin substance as well as the synthesis of collagen and hyaluronic acid within the body. Magnolia Extract is the third active ingredient in the ampule, neutralising free radicals that have caused skin damage and reducing the inflammatory process in the skin.

After the first five days, I moved on to the second set of ampules, the Ectoin face serum. Again, I applied this serum after cleansing in the evening. My skin calmed down but it was hard to say if I noticed any other distinct changes from using this serum.

Ampules 11-15, Q10

The Q10 face serum has been developed to stimulate the skin’s cellular metabolism, prevent oxidative stress in cells, increase the skin’s moisture storage capacity and collagen production. Q10 is a naturally-occurring enzyme within the skin which due to stress and environmental influences is quickly depleted. The Q10 face serum ampule contains Q10 derived from fermented yeast, it’s an antioxidant and collagen booster; supported by Magnolia Extract, another antioxidant. In addition Lecithin, Sodium and Hyaluronate derived from a low molecular hyaluronic acid increase the skin’s moisture levels, compensating for water loss.

The third (and final) set of five ampules, the Q10 face serum, are for the last five days of the treatment. Again, I applied the serum after cleansing, each evening. My skin seemed to really love this serum, although it may have been the effect of all three. My skin appeared clearer, smoother and brighter.

Thoughts On Motherhood (part one)

It’s been a little while and I’m sorry I didn’t say I’d be away for so long. Motherhood is so new to me and I really had no idea what to expect or how I would find it. I thought I’d be away from the blog for three months, and then back to shooting and writing, but it’s been six months and I still don’t feel ready to commit to regular posts, just yet. Being a mum is my top priority now and I’m putting my whole heart into it. I want to be the best mum I can be to Isabelle and that means being present for her. My oldest friend told me last week that it’s the best thing I could possibly do, as I’ll never get this time with her again.

In truth, I feel so lucky and privileged to be Isabelle’s mum. She’s easygoing, settled and very happy the majority of the time. She only really cries if she’s tired, hungry or needs her nappy changing. It’s not always easy, it’s been very tough at times (there have been tears) but it’s incredibly rewarding in equal measure. She’s absolutely the best thing to happen to me/us in a long time.

Every day she changes; growing and developing new skills, and I really don’t want to miss any of it. I’m incredibly fortunate that my husband is supporting us and has given me this time to spend with her. So you can probably see why I might be a bit reluctant to commit to lots of post when they take up so much time to create, time away from Isabelle.

Depression, Anxiety & The Pressures of Motherhood

Pregnancy forced me to look inward and face the mental health issues I’ve struggled with in the past – nothing like bringing a little human into this world to make you want to get your shit together. I want to let go of the past and move forward as a happier, healthier person so that Isabelle grows up seeing me that way and is encouraged to be that way too. I’m planning to do some journaling to help get everything out of my head and hopefully put it all to rest.

I would describe myself as an anxious first-time mum, and I didn’t think I would be. At first I was nervous leaving the house with Isabelle, always worrying something would happen to her. I’m conscious that if not kept in check I’ll end up with an anxious baby; at the moment she’s far from it. At six months old she already has a wonderful, inquisitive, sociable and happy personality that is infectious to be around. I’ve gotten less anxious over time as Isabelle has become a little more robust and a little less fragile. As she grows I know I have to find the confidence to expose her to new experiences, otherwise I won’t be doing the best job I can. I’m taking it all one step at a time.

Over the last six months, I’ve put a lot of pressure on myself to meet Isabelle’s every need; feeding, changing, carrying, bouncing, pushing and generally entertaining her with a focus on her development. With little to no help from anyone except Dan, it’s been exhausting and overwhelming at times. Reading a few articles on Motherly and ‘What Mothers Do’ by Naomi Stadlan helped me to realise I’ve been doing more than enough. Friends and family regularly point out what a happy baby she is which helps reaffirm I’m doing a good job. It’s just so hard to know where to draw the line on doing a good job and running myself into the ground.

I thought I’d be the sort of mum that carried on with her life as before, only with a baby in tow. I realise now that I’d be doing Isabelle an injustice if I were to pretend everything was still the same. I’m not in a rush to return to my old life, this new one is far more exciting.

My Body, Now

In the 40ish weeks of pregnancy your body changes to the point you no longer recognise it. It takes a lot longer for it to recover, some say up to 18 months. Initially, I found it hard to cope with the ‘buddha-belly’ bump that was left behind after birth but it has shrunk and I now fit back into my old clothes (thanks to breastfeeding and a lot of walking). I don’t think my body will ever be quite the same again but I’ve found a new confidence and have fewer worries about it. I’m lucky that I didn’t gain any new stretch-marks (possibly due to my pregnancy routine). I still find it hard to believe that I grew this little person in MY body, it’s incredible.

Breastfeeding

It might not be for everyone but I’m so pleased that I’ve breastfed Isabelle. It’s not the easiest but I’ve been luckier than most, with both of us taking to it quickly. I credit Harriet, a Head Midwife at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, for insisting I persevere and showing me how to do it that first, shattered day. It helped Isabelle and I bond quickly thanks to the physical closeness, as well as the oxytocin (the hormone that also stimulates milk production). There are so many amazing things contained in breastmilk that she can’t get from formula, including some essential antibodies that continue to strengthen her immune system.

There have been a few struggles, too. The worst has got to be blocked ducts which I’ve had several time; once so bad that I ended up brandishing a needle to my nipple. Day-to-day, I feel sick almost every time oxytocin is released into my bloodstream. It doesn’t last long but catches me off-guard constantly. Usually, it’s just as I’ve made something to eat and then I don’t feel like eating. I’ve also found breastfeeding a little restricting at times, especially early on when I needed to feed her more regularly. Knowing where you can breastfeed comfortably makes such a difference. Legally you can do it anywhere. Isabelle also went through a phase of being so distracted when we were out that she wouldn’t feed, so I needed to be at home to feed her.

Sustainability

I look at the world so differently now and want to make it a better place for Isabelle, for her future. I’m thinking more about sustainability, how I can make more changes in my life and encourage others to, as well. You’ll see me featuring a lot more (if not all) sustainably and ethically produced products; alongside lots of older products that I’ve owned for a while. I’m also going to be passing on items that no longer work for me in the hope that they do for others. Keep a look out in my Instagram Stories and in the highlights under #PassItOn.

Susanne Kaufmann Bespoke Rejuvenating Facial

This post was created in collaboration with Susanne Kaufmann.

Susanne Kaufmann is without question my favourite skincare brand, their natural products are gentle yet effective on my sensitive skin, whilst also sustainably made. Recently, I was invited to visit them at their Liberty London pop-up to experience their Bespoke Rejuvenating Facial. It’s a new treatment that incorporates a product they recently developed to coincide with their 15th anniversary, the Pollution Skin Defense System.

To help me relax Andrea (my skincare therapist) sprayed my pillow and the surrounding air with Pillow Spray Calming. It’s a lovely mist with a soothing scent containing lavender and orange oils. Lavender is well-known for its calming properties whilst orange oil supports the respiratory passages, ensuring you breath well throughout your treatment, important for deep relaxation.

The treatment started with a thorough double cleanse using their Cleansing Milk, the base of which is rose-hip seed oil, which is particularly good for dehydrated skin. It also contains a soothing herbal compound of chamomile, sage and St. John’s wort flowers. Andrea then applied Tonic Clarifying, a gentle tonic that contains the same herbal compound as the Cleansing Milk but with the addition of mallow. It doesn’t contain any alcohol so won’t strip the skin like some.

Once my face and décolletage were feeling lovely and clean, a double peel was applied. This consisted of their Enzyme Peel being applied all over the area, before being layered on top with their Facial Peel. The Enzyme Peel uses gentle fruit acids from apple, papaya and kiwi to remove dead skin cells without any abrasiveness (that can stress to the epidermis); it’s a chemical peel but the gentlest kind. It also contains ectoine, fenugreek and fermented white lupins, they help to regenerate skin cells, as well as having a revitalising and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. In addition to that, aloe vera cools and soothes the skin. The Facial Peel is a physical peel which uses soft plant granules alongside a herbal compound of mallow, yarrow and St. John’s wort flowers to gently remove dead skin cells and impurities. The soft plant granules dissolve in the peeling process so they don’t irritate or scratch the skin.

After Andrea had removed all the dead skin cells and impurities from my skin, she started to give it some much needed revitalisation. Initially, she used the first ampule from the Pollution Skin Defense System, vitamin C. The vitamin C ampoule contains a serum that improves the skin’s own ability to fight against free radicals and at the same time detoxify the cells.

This is when things started to get really interesting. The massage techniques that they use at Susanne Kaufmann are just as important as the products they create. Their products are fantastic and I would wholly recommend using them at home but you will struggle to replicate their massage techniques. For this reason I would suggest you go in and experience a facial with them. The first massage I received was a fascia massage. It’s not the most gentle but the effect is a complete release of tension in the face muscles. Andrea then moved on to a lymphatic drainage massage, to increase the flow of lymph from the face and help remove toxins from the skin. She followed this with the ultimate scalp massage to further release any tension. This is a brilliant treatment for anyone looking for a relaxing facial treatment, not all leave you feeling as refreshed and tension-free as this one.

Andrea then applied the second ampule from the Pollution Skin Defense System, ectoin which stimulates cell regeneration and strengthens cell protection. This was followed by their Lifting Mask Line A which was worked deep into the skin with another gentle face massage. It’s one of their most active anti-ageing products, containing more ectoin, fermented white lupin blossom extract to firm up the tissue, pure bioflavonoids to fight free radicals, and argan oil as its base which has a strong antioxidant effect. This all results in a strong, smoothing and lifting effect.

After about 10 minutes the mask was removed and the the third ampule from the Pollution Skin Defense System was applied, the powerful Q10 serum which stimulates collagen production. This was followed with Day Cream Line A and Eye Cream Line A, both of which also contain ectoin, fermented white lupin blossom extract and pure bioflavonoids. The Day Cream Line A also contains silk proteins which provide the skin with a great deal of moisture and form a protective film. Whilst the Eye Cream Line A contains, in addition, elderberry extract to reduce swollen eyes. Unusually it can be used all over the eyelid (many aren’t). To encourage the absorption of the products, jade rollers were used across my face, neck and décolletage.

The next time Susanne Kaufmann are at Liberty London make sure you book a treatment, just please leave me a slot! They take place every two months, the next ones will be from 25thNovember – 1st December. Alternatively, if you happen to be taking your next holiday at the beautiful São Lourenço do Barrocal in Portugal they offer Susanne Kaufmann treatments. And, if you’re planning a retreat for the new year I’d recommend Hotel Post Bezau in Austria (where the Susanne Kaufmann brand began);  you can incorporate a Bespoke Rejuvenating Facial into your experience. I’m hoping I’ll get the chance to visit and write about both in the coming year.

Evening Skincare Ritual with Immunocologie

I’m lucky that through my work, I get to meet talented and knowledgable people within the skincare industry. Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Karen Ballou, founder of Immunocologie. Karen is fascinating to speak to, her breadth of knowledge of the skincare industry is astounding; having worked as a therapist, teacher and in product development before creating her own skincare brand. It was her battle with Hodgkin Lymphoma that led her to do so. The products have been developed with the aim of creating the cleanest and most effective skincare on the market. The oils and extracts used within the products are sourced from around the world sustainably and equitably.

Not only did I get the chance to speak to Karen one-to-one but she personally treated me to a facial, a wonderful experience that she talked me through as she went along. There’s little chance of me fully replicating the treatment at home (I just don’t have Karen’s skills), what I have done though is create an evening skincare ritual with Immunocologie products.

I start with Cleansing Lotion, working it thoroughly into my skin (as Karen showed me) before removing it with a damp cloth. It contains desert date seed oil which deeply nourishes the skin and grape seed extract, an antioxidant that defends against free-radicals whilst gently exfoliating and deeply nourishing the skin.

Once or twice a week I will follow this with Exfoliating Lotion, a gentle exfoliator containing lactic acid and glycolic acid. The lactic acid helps to combat breakouts while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and the glycolic acid is great for dull, pigmented and ageing skin, it also stimulates collagen production. The lactic acid helps combat the drying effect of the glycolic acid. It can feel warm and tingly but not unpleasant.

It’s then time to start layering the skin with moisture. A thorough spritz of Vital Ionic Mist kicks things off. It’s a hydrating, mineral-rich toning spray that helps balance the skin. It combines montmorillonite, kaolin and illite clays. Montmorillonite clay is one of the most mineral rich, detoxifiying clays in the world. Kaolin clay soothes the skin whilst removing impurities and cleansing pores. llite tightens pores and gently exfoliates, soaks up excess oil but also pulls blood towards the surface of the skin, boosting circulation.

When you layer moisturising products it’s important to start with the lightest products first, moving towards the thicker ones because the lighter the product the deeper it’s likely to travel into your skin. So first up is Hyaluronic Serum, a wonderful refreshing clear serum that contains two sizes of hyaluronic acid molecule, one helps pull moisture to the surface from within whilst the other helps draw moisture in from the surface (including from the other products I use on top). It’s great for calming inflammation and plumping the skin.

Next up, I use Face Serum, a light dry oil that’s super nourishing thanks to the desert date seed oil and shea seed extract that it contains. It also contains protium heptaphyllum resin extract which comes from an Amazonian tree, it is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

For the top layer of moisture I use Night Protection, a rich cream that my skin quickly absorbs. It also contains desert date seed oil and protium heptaphyllum resin extract, as well as moringa oleifera seed oil. It stimulates the production of natural hyaluronic acid to increase hydration within the skin as well as boosting the skin’s elasticity.

And lastly, I use Eye Contour Serum, a light creamy serum that tightens and lifts the skin around the eyes, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and boosting skin elasticity. It contains baobab seed oil, a rich source of omega acids which are incredibly nourishing whilst being anti-inflammatory. It also contains lannae microcarpa fruit extract which has a vasoconstrictor effect, meaning it reduces the size of capillaries, causing your eyes to appear less puffy and reducing dark circles.

Effective Pregnancy Body Care Essentials

When I found out I was pregnant it became more important to me to find good quality products to use on my body that were made with natural ingredients. I wanted to give myself the best chance of being able to spring back to shape (I know in reality it will never be quite the same) whilst also thinking about what my body would be absorbing and could potentially be entering my blood stream and my growing baby’s. Below are the products I have loved using and would absolutely recommend whether you’re pregnant, or not.

DRY BODY BRUSH

As I noticed my body really begin to change shape in my second trimester I decided to make dry body brushing a daily ritual. I’ve had my Elemis Dry Body Brush for years, and used it on and off, but over the last few months I’ve managed to make it a permanent part of my morning routine. Dry body brushing stimulates the lymphatic system, the system responsible for moving waste around the body. It’s also a brilliant way to boost your circulation in general, get rid of dead skin cells and encourage the production of new ones.

Cellulite and varicose veins are common side effects of pregnancy, dry body brushing is one way I’ve tried to help reduce the chances of getting either. Remember to always brush towards your heart, using long, firm strokes.

SUSANNE KAUFMANN STRETCH MARK OIL

Susanne Kaufmann Stretch Mark Oil is a medium-weight oil that contains almond, wheat germ and jojoba oils, along with arnica flower extract. The almond oil smoothes the skin, whilst the wheat germ oil (which is high in vitamin E) and jojoba oil moisturise and help improve the elasticity of the skin. The arnica flower extract helps reduce water retention, another side effect of pregnancy.

I started using this oil pretty early on in my pregnancy, as I wanted to give myself the best chance of avoiding any new stretch marks. Genetics pay a huge part in whether or not we get them but I wasn’t taking any risks.

IMMUNOCOLOGIE BODY SERUM

The Immunocologie Body Serum is a light-weight dry oil that comes in an easy-to-use spray. It’s made with sunflower seed, desert date seed and rosemary leaf oils. Sunflower seed oil contains omegas 3, 6 and 9 which help improve moisture levels in the skin as well as helping it to retain moisture which leads to improved elasticity. Desert date seed oil is deeply nourishing and penetrates the skin quickly so it’s not left feeling greasy. Rosemary leaf oil is rich in vitamins and minerals which lift and firm skin.

I’ve not just grown a bump over the last 9 months but gotten a little larger all over. Mainly this is due to the increased levels of estrogen in my body, so pretty unavoidable. Thankfully one of my friends warned me in advance and told me to regularly moisturise the whole of my body. This body serum was my favourite to use all over as it’s not heavy (great, given the heat this summer) and doesn’t leave the skin feeling greasy.

The Middle Months of Pregnancy

It was around month five or six that I really started to notice how much my body had begun to change. It was depressing to look in my wardrobe, at first, as I felt as though I had nothing to wear. The best thing I did was go through, try on and separate out the items that did still fit.

Months five and six were the toughest for me, in terms of how I felt about my body. Seeing my bump grow was amazing but I felt completely outside of my comfort zone when it came to the rest of my body. The lack of movement and the excessive sweet tooth I had in the early days had caught up with me and I felt bigger all over, bigger than I have ever been before. I ate healthily but was still not getting out as much as I would have liked to, due to a persisting lack of energy.

I’ve always had a complicated relationship with my body, feeling that it’s never quite how I’d like it to be, regardless of what I do. In the second trimester I felt further from that ideal than ever before and it’s this lack of control that I found hardest to cope with. I got stricter with my diet, making sure I ate with nutrition in mind, rather than whatever I fancied in the moment. Everyone loves to tell you when you’re pregnant that “it’s okay, you’re eating for two” or that “you should eat whatever you like”; I don’t agree with this. I feel like this is the best time to focus on getting as many vitamins and minerals in your diet as you can, and eating as healthily as possible. At the end of the day, I’m growing a human being and I want to give them the best chance of being healthy and strong. That doesn’t mean I’ve not reached for the odd slice of cake and I’ve definitely started to like chocolate a lot more (only it’s got to be good quality and just two squares at a time, mind) but I’ve also got into the habit of having an apple most days and have found healthier alternatives to the sweet things, like homemade fruit and seed bars, and banana bread which I’ve made using coconut sugar.

It was towards the end of the sixth month that I finally started to gain more energy. Eager to get back to normality, I quickly booked in meetings, shoots and press events; only I took on too much, too soon. A full day in town resulted in a full day of doing nothing but recovering the next day, sometimes for two days. I listened to my body and learnt to take things more slowly, On the up side, my skin has finally settled down and I have started to get the pregnancy glow everyone talks about.

Clean Sunscreens

I’ve chosen to use clean sunscreens since discovering that conventional sunscreens contain chemicals that irritate our skin (this causes inflammation which then leads to ageing), effect our endocrine systems and are damaging to sea life. This doesn’t mean we should avoid sunscreen, just that we should be picky about which ones we choose to use. Two chemicals that you should make sure you avoid are Oxybenzone and Octinoxate (AKA Octylmethoxycinnamate) which are known to have an effect on hormones and cause skin allergies.

It is estimated by scientists that sun damage is responsible for 90% of premature skin ageing. It was once thought that UVB radiation alone was responsible for this but it’s now been found that the heat from UVA rays can contribute to the loss of skin elasticity, firmness and the appearance of premature wrinkles. This is why it’s important to use sun protection products that protect you against both.

The main products I used whilst I was on holiday in Greece were from the Susanne Kaufmann Sun Care Trio; which includes Face Broad Spectrum Protection Sunscreen SPF 30, Body Protection Sunscreen SPF 25 and After Sun Gel. Not only do these products offer protection against the sun but they also offer hydration, regeneration and anti-ageing benefits; just like a good skincare regimen. They were made and formulated in the Austrian Alps from the finest natural and botanical ingredients. They all smell incredible, a little bit like melon and the application is better than anything I’ve used before. They’re waterproof but you should reapply them after swimming. They’re also gentle enough for sensitive skin and children of 6 months and older.

Both the face and body products are hybrid formulas that combine mineral and botanical ingredients. On the mineral side there’s Zano® a patented mineral UV filter derived from Zinc Oxide that is non-irritating and mild on the skin. On the botanical side there’s Elix-IR™, formulated from Knotgrass Extract, a flavonoid-rich ingredient that protects the dermis fibres against sun damage. They also contain Ectoin, a natural cell protectant and powerful anti-ageing ingredient.

I used Sensai Silky Bronze Cellular Protective Cream For Face SPF 50 as I like to use a higher SPF on my face and my chest, as it can burn quite easily. I’m pleased to say it didn’t this time. It’s another product that has a lovely smooth application and smells likes peaches. Sensai have developed ADVAN, an advanced cellular protector to drastically reduce UV radiation and avoid deep level skin damage whilst giving hydration. Sansho (Zanthoxylum Piperitum) Extract effectively and immediately protects skin cells on a DNA level from UV rays. Koishimaru Silk stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid within the skin’s dermal and epidermal cells, keeping it well moisturised and CPX Vital Extract moisturises, firms and minimises fine lines.

Susanne Kaufmann Face Broad Spectrum Protection Sunscreen SPF 30* | Susanne Kaufmann Sun Cream Cell Protection SPF 25* | Susanne Kaufmann After Sun Gel* | Sensai Silky Bronze Cellular Protective Cream For Face SPF 50* | La Roche-Posay Anthelios Body Milk SPF 50+* | La Roche-Posay Anthelios Anti-Shine SPF 50+*

For the first few days I used La Roche-Posay Anthelios Body Milk SPF 50+ on my body and La Roche-Posay Anthelios Anti-Shine SPF 50+ on my chest, just whilst my pale skin adjusted to the sun and began to tan. The body milk has been designed for sensitive and sun-allergic skin and the anti-shine gel-cream is specifically designed for blemish-prone skin or those that suffers from prickly-heat. It’s great for the chest and it doesn’t feel greasy or sweaty after a few minutes in the sun.

Whether you’re having a staycation or heading off somewhere hotter it’s equally important to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays. Have a wonderful time whatever you do this summer.

Apivita Fig Body Care

APIVITA Refreshing Fig Shower Gel with Essential Oils* | APIVITA Refreshing Fig Moisturizing Body Milk*

APIVITA is a lovely Greek beauty brand, they create clean products that harness naturally-derived active ingredients, Greek plant extracts, nutritionally high-value beehive products and organic essential oils. They do not use silicones, parabens, mineral oil, propylene glycol, polycyclic musks, nitromusks, phthalates, or other ingredients that have been associated with adverse health or environmental effects.

The brand was started back in 1979 by two pharmacists, Nikos and Niki Koutsianas. It was the first natural cosmetics company in Greece. Their passion for the bio-diversity of Greek nature, bee products and the holistic approach of Hippocrates have guided them in creating natural, effective, holistic products. APIVITA have now developed and established over 300 products for the face, body and hair. Their ethos has always been about being sustainable. They set themselves environmental targets as well as financial ones.

I’ve been using APIVITA’s Refreshing Fig Shower Gel with Essential Oils and Moisturizing Body Milk which both use at least 90% natural ingredients. I’m even more aware of what I put on my body since being pregnant as your skin absorbs the products you put on it and everything in them, especially moisturisers that you leave on the skin. The Refreshing Fig scent smells good enough to eat, it genuinely smells like freshly cut figs and sends me back to summer holidays on Greek islands. The shower gel is mild and non-stripping and the body milk is rich and nourishing. Give the body milk a few minutes to be absorbed before you get dressed.

I’m sure it hasn’t gone unnoticed that things have quietened down here on my blog, as well as over on my Instagram. The reason for this is that I’m currently growing a little person. The bump is six and a half months along now. We’re both really excited but it’s mad to think about how different our lives will be in three and a half months. (My maths isn’t off btw, most pregnancies last 40 weeks!! Thanks Pandora for breaking that one to me.) For me there have already been some big changes, some expected, others not so much. For the time-being I’m going to share a little of what the first three months were like.

The only sign that something was going on with my body during the first month was that my boobs started to feel particularly tender. I wasn’t sick once (phew) and found out fairly early on that I was pregnant. I kept my head down and carried on pretty much as normal – minus the alcohol, rare meat, sushi, etc..

The second month I started to feel really, really tired around 2pm everyday. This is the time of day that I’d have usually had a coffee pre-pregnancy but I’ve decided to avoid coffee whilst pregnant as it has so much caffeine in and it’s recommended you reduce your intake. To compensate I got into a bad habit of picking up something sweet to keep me going.

Not drinking over Christmas was a big tip-off to friends and family but we weren’t prepared to tell anyone until we were past the 12 week mark. I experienced a lot of anxiety about losing the baby early on. There wasn’t a specific reason for this, I just found it disconcerting not being able feel or see anything that was going on. Apart from taking another pregnancy test there’s no confirmation from anyone until your 12 week scan that everything is as it should be. The worst thing was that some of my friends started asking me if I was pregnant and I hated being forced to lie to them. (If you suspect your friend is pregnant please wait for them to tell you, don’t ask.)

By the third month I felt huge (little did I know what was to come) and as though everyone could tell I was pregnant. I was even more tired than before and my IBS was going into overdrive with anything and everything I ate. I felt like a balloon long before I thought I should and my regular clothes stopped fitting me super early. This is one reason my personal style posts dried up, almost immediately. The other is that I had zero energy for the first few months. I’ve been incredibly lucky not to have been sick at all but the exhaustion meant that I barely left the house and when I did it knocked me for six. If you’re in a similar situation I would recommend Floridix, it’s an iron supplement that has definitely helped me, that and afternoon naps.

I’ve had to make quite a few adjustments. Initially, I found going into town quite stressful, especially since it was during rush hour. I now only go in once a week if necessary, and never during rush hour.

I’ve found Anneli Bush’s accounts of pregnancy and beyond really helpful, as well as Alex Stedman‘s (congratulations to both of them). Having a couple of people share their experiences a little ahead has kept me calm, as well as giving me some style tips. I didn’t want to change my style because of my pregnancy. It’s been a bit of challenge, especially given I live in jeans at least 50% of the time. Alex Eagle (currently in her second pregnancy) gave me some great advice. She suggested buying some large vintage men’s shirts (and getting them personalised by Hand & Lock, so they feel a bit special) and investing in a really good pair of leggings from Live The Process (now stocked at Alex Eagle Studio).

My first move was to convert a pair of vintage 501s, swapping the front pockets for big wide strips of elastic (as seen above). I also bought a few men’s long sleeve t-shirts in black and white. That covered the basics for a little while. Going for a size up in tops and dresses during the first few months has made it possible for me to stick with the brands I usually wear.

Pfeffer Sal’s ‘Gently Does It’ Facial Treatment

This post was created in collaboration with Pfeffer Sal.

If you’re looking for a short-term escape from the intensity of life in London, and you want long-term effects, it’s a good idea to book yourself in for a Pfeffer Sal ‘Gently Does It‘ facial treatment. I had my first experience of this incredible treatment a few weeks ago and it had such an amazing effect on me and my skin.

It’s not uncommon for me to completely relax during a good massage but never before have I had this experience during a facial. Raluca (my facialist) is an absolute genius with her hands! I was cleansed, massaged and moisturised until I was in a Zen-like state. I could have dropped off to sleep at any moment and would have stayed in the warm cosy bed for an hour longer, were it possible. I spent the first 15 minutes letting go of the days worries and tensions, getting used to the new surroundings and chatting to Raluca. I find it easier to relax if I have a good idea of what my facialist is about to do, that way there aren’t any shocks along the way.

The ‘Gently Does It’ facial is all about nourishing and cleansing your skin in a gentle but effective way. It’s perfect for those with sensitive skin, those who are pregnant or those simply looking for a facial that uses natural and chemical-free ingredients and technology.

It begins with a double cleanse and gentle exfoliation with a enzyme exfoliator. Steam is directed onto the skin throughout to help open up the pores and prepare the skin for extractions. (I know extractions aren’t that common in gentle facial treatments but my skin really needed some help and it was done gently, leaving no red marks.) A lovely custom blended serum is then applied to the skin and ultrasound technology is used to help it penetrate deep into the various layers of the skin. Live probiotics are then massaged into the skin to help rebalance, hydrate and boost the skin’s natural micro-biome, which are key to optimal skin function and structureA growth factor mask is then applied and left on long enough to stimulate collagen production, boost skin renewal and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Don’t worry, the Epidermal Growth Factor in the mask comes from barley seeds, nothing gross. A botanical and silver-rich mist is then spritzed across the face. Colloidal silver is antimicrobial, meaning it helps eliminate acne, firm skin and heal infections. To finish a face cream and SPF are applied.

Pfeffer Sal is located at the end of a pretty little mews between Warren Street and Great Portland Street stations. You walk down a few steps and through a rustic grey wooden door. Beyond you find yourself in a little underground oasis with air filtering plants and anti-bacterial copper pipes used for door handles, furniture frames and taps. There’s also an air filtration system throughout, combatting London’s polluted air. It’s a calming space with soothing music and soft lighting. The perfect place to relax and recoup.

Fresh Spring Fragrances

Roger & Gallet Thé Fantaisie* | Atkinsons Posh On The Green* | MALIN + GOETZ Cannabis*

If you’re looking for a simple seasonal update why not try a change of fragrance. With Spring only a month away I’ve selected a few fresh Spring fragrances for you to try. I prefer fresh scents over strong ouds or sweet fruity fragrances anyway, as they feel cleaner and less overwhelming to me, and to others. I see fragrance as an extension of style, people react not just to how you look but how you smell, too, good or bad. My signature scent is a woody clean amber, it’s slightly warm, unisex and always gets a good reaction but it’s more suited to the the colder months of the year.

This time of year is usually about fresh starts, flowers and plants start to regrow, we begin to switch our homes for warm, cosy hideaways to fresh and bright spaces, and we start to shed the heavier warmer layers in our wardrobe. It’s the perfect time to swap your winter fragrance for something fresher.

Atkinsons Posh On The Green*

Inspired by the British love of a manicured lawn, this scent takes its inspiration from traditional garden parties, polo matches in the summer sun, a day spent watching the cricket and Wimbledon’s manicured grass courts. There’s even a touch of gin and tonic about it. It’s a clean blend, suitable for both men and women, with top notes of coriander and petit grain, middle notes of galbanum and geranium, and base notes of vetiver and cedarwood.

MALIN + GOETZ Cannabis*

Don’t jump to conclusions too quickly with this one, this is not going to make you smell like a naughty teenager. As with all their fragrances it’s fresh and lively; with top notes of bergamot and black pepper, middle notes of magnolia, and base notes of cedarwood, patchouli and sandalwood. If you prefer something a touch more masculine, this is a great one for you.

Roger & Gallet Thé Fantaisie*

This is a much more complex fragrance with many different notes yet it remains delicate. Alberto Morillas combined top notes of pine tree, lemon, mandarin, orange, geranium, and coriander; middle notes of nutmeg, palmarosa, clary sage, pink pepper and black tea; and base notes of benzoin resinoid, sandalwood and vetiver. It’s another unisex fragrance but I would say it’s more rich than the others and leans towards the feminine.

Spot Treatments That Work

As a teenager I was one of the lucky ones, with barely a spot on my face. Fast-forward to my 30s and it’s been a different story so far. As soon as I stopped taking the pill, just over a year ago, my skin flared up. Initially it was a couple of spots, they would start to clear and then (frustratingly) a couple more would appear. The sudden change in my hormones definitely had a significant affect. I’m sure the pill has covered up many issues that would have otherwise been apparent on my skin. On top of that I’ve struggled with problems with my digestive system for years, thanks to a particularly horrid batch of antibiotics I was prescribed in my early 20s. Anything that’s going wrong in your digestion system will usually show in your skin. Treating these conditions is the most important way for me to deal with my spots but here are some of the best spot treatments that work for me.

1. Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask*

A moisturising mask might not seem like an obvious choice when dealing with spots but bear with me. The skin is in trauma whilst dealing with spots, and needs something calming and soothing. This is not a heavy mask and, thanks to the honey it contains, is great for soothing and healing the skin. Use once a week on a Sunday morning after cleansing or use it last thing before you go to bed instead of a night cream.

2. Pai Skincare Copaiba Deep Cleanse AHA Mask*

Another effective mask, this one gives your skin a thorough cleanse without stressing it further. The AHA fruit acids help remove dead skin cells whilst the kaolin clay draws out impurities without leaving your skin dry or tight. Use it once a week for up to 10 minutes, removing it gently with warm water and the muslin cloth that comes with it.

3. Dermalogica AGE Smart Daily Superfoliant

When you have spots and blackheads you still need to exfoliate your skin regularly, to remove dead skin cells that contribute to blocked pores. This is one of the gentlest exfoliators I’ve ever used whilst still being effective. It’s a physical exfoliant (rather than chemical) that uses finely milled rice powder to lightly exfoliate whilst the charcoal powder it contains has an anti-bacterial effect. I use this every day or every other day. Dermalogica say you can use it twice a day but I don’t think that’s necessary and possibly a little excessive if you have sensitive skin.

4. Immunocologie Vital Clay Spot Treatment*

This is, without question, the secret weapon in my spot fighting arsenal! Whatever you’ve read, spots do not disappear overnight but with this little pot you can certainly speed up the process. It has an unusual texture, somewhere between a clay and a gel, combining montmorillonite clay, kaolin clay and salicylic acid. I apply it to my spots with a cotton bud in the evening, after cleansing. I look as though I have Shrek-like spots on my face for the 10 minutes it takes to dry. I then remove it with warm water. And that’s it.

5. Erno Laszlo Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar*

I usually stick to cream cleansers but this cleansing bar was recommended to me and I can’t resist a good recommendation. The main active ingredient is Dead Sea mud which reputedly contains 26 minerals that deeply detoxify, exfoliate and hydrate the skin. You can use it on its own or in combination with their Detoxifying Cleansing Oil*. I’d recommend using both when you’re taking off your make-up.

New Year Intentions

I’ve never been one to think too far ahead. When someone asks me where I see myself in 5 years or 10 years my answer is usually quite predictable with no real specific goals except to be settled and happy. In some ways this is good because I tend to live in the present moment. In other ways it’s not so great because it’s important to feel you have achieved something and to know that you can achieve things if you put your mind to them.

I thought I’d try something new this year and set some New Year intentions. Intentions are more gentle than resolutions, I’ve never really stuck with resolutions and often forget about them as soon as January is over. A resolution can leave you feeling disappointed with yourself if you’re unable to complete them in the time you have allocated whereas an intention is more encouraging, something to continue to aim for this year, and next.

Six New Year Intentions

Follow My Own Path

It’s so easy to look at and take direction from others who have gone before us but to be true to myself, and get the most out of life, I think it’s important to follow my own path.

Be Mindful of What I Absorb

With so much information coming from every direction I think it’s important to learn to filter what’s useful and inspiring from what’s not. I plan to spend time reading more of the magazines I find inspiring, to limit my time online to sites and blogs that enrich my perspective, and to continue to surround myself with kind, interesting people, I respect.

Slow Down

I tend to squeeze a lot into each day, rarely giving myself the time to enjoy the moment or appreciate what I have achieved. I think it’s better to do less but do it well.

Continue To Learn

If there’s one thing that drives me it’s the desire to keep learning, whether that’s in photography, cooking, designing or styling.

Spend More Time Outside

There’s something so refreshing about a walk in the park or countryside, switching off from everything apart from what’s in front of me. It really helps to clear my mind and I don’t do it enough.

Go With The Flow

I need to learn to let go a little and appreciate the incidental things that happen, rather than worrying about what I think I should be doing.

Nourishing Skincare

At this time of year it’s very important to keep your skin really well nourished. Cold air, hot air and the constant change between the two can leave skin confused and a little traumatised. These are some of the nourishing skincare products I’ve been using in my skincare regimen this season, to keep mine in check.

Immunocologie Body Serum*

I’m obsessed with this moisturising dry oil from Immunocologie. It’s a lightweight oil that vanishes into my skin in less than a minute, so no waiting around to get dressed. The oil is absorbed quickly thanks to Immunocolgie’s Vital Oligo Science, a natural skincare delivery system. It’s fairly mess-free as the spray nozzle makes it easy to apply, and it also smells divine. After using it my skin feels well moisturised but not at all greasy.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% +B5

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin and it is there to aide in the production of collagen. It also helps skin retain moisture when the molecules are small enough to be absorbed deeply. The Ordinary‘s Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 contains “low, medium and high-molecular weight hyaluronic acid, as well as a next-generation hyaluronic acid crosspolymer at a combined concentration of 2% for multi-depth hydration”. If the molecules are too large and sit on the surface of the skin all they do is draw moisture out of the skin so that just the surface is plumped.

Pai Skincare Instant Calm Redness Serum*

I seem to get through a bottle of this lovely calming serum from Pai (the sensitive skincare specialists) each month. It’s a light fluid that’s easily absorbed, perfect for use under your daily moisturiser or face oil. It contains Sea Aster which “inhibits the release of cutaneous neuropeptides, the molecules that cause skin to flare, while strengthening the surface skin, helping to reduce the appearance of redness; as well as Wild Oat which is famed for its ability to soothe reactive skin, enriched Wild Oat extract works to improve the appearance of delicate or damaged skin and helps to protect skin against environmental irritants”.

Immunocologie Super 7 Elixir Face Serum*

Another really great serum, it’s one which I prefer to use at night as it’s a little thicker and I like to allow it to settle into the skin before applying my night time moisturiser. It’s super nourishing thanks to a few key ingredients. The first of which you might find a little squeamish, Snail Secretion Filtrate. The Korean’s have been using it for ages and have some of the most advanced skincare in the world. It contains lots of good things like hyaluronic acid and antimicrobial peptides, great for both nourishing and repairing the skin. Anther key ingredient, Hibiscus Esculentus Fruit Extract (AKA Okra Extract) has been known to be used in Ayurvedic medicine thanks to its antibacterial properties which help the skin to heal. And, the essential fatty acids and anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties found in Desert Date (Balanites Roxburghii) Seed Oil soften and repair dry and damaged skin.

Pai Skincare Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser*

If you’re looking for a gentle but effective cleanser, look no further. When your skin is feeling a bit sensitive from the elements the last thing you should do is use something aggressive on it. It’s already on high alert and this would only cause more distress. Instead reach for something soothing and gentle. Pai have developed the perfect cleanser, it’s a cream cleanser that you gently massage into the face and then wash off using their Dual-Effect Sensitive Skin Cloth (which comes with the cleanser). It contains Camellia Oil which has both Omega 9 fatty acids and Vitamin E to nourish the skin, as well as Damask Otto Rose Oil which helps skin retain moisture.

Immunocologie Night Protection*

This is the first dedicated night cream I’ve used in a quite a while. I’d forgotten why it’s important to have a separate moisturiser for day and night. Skincare brands don’t make both so that they can sell you twice as many products but because each offers different properties that are more affective at different times of the day. Immunocologie’s Night Protection works to hydrate and help repair skin overnight. It uses Desert Date (Balanites Roxburghii) Seed Oil just like the Super 7 Elixir Face Serum to soften and repair. Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil which is rich in anti-oxidants and Vitamin C helps defend against free-radicals which age the skin. And, Protium Heptaphyllun Resin is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Caring For Highlighted Hair

I’ve dabbled with brown hair before but I’ve always felt more comfortable and confident as a blonde. As I’ve gotten older my naturally blonde hair has turned more mousey blonde and I’ve resorted to highlights and high-lift tints to maintain the lighter look I prefer. The downside is that my fine hair has become quite dry and harder to style. I’ve resorted to using heated tools again but this causes further damage, even with a heat protector. I’m guessing I’m not the only one in this situation so I thought I’d share the latest haircare products I’ve been using on my highlighted hair that have made a huge difference. Not surprisingly, they’ve become an essential part of my routine.

I’m a tough customer when it comes to haircare products, I find they usually over promise and under deliver. I’ve been using the same professional shampoo and conditioner for the last two years, as everything I’ve tried since just hasn’t compared. My old staples are not the worst products, they’ve done a fairly good job but I’ve always thought that there might be something better, and that my hair needed something extra.

Sachajuan is not a new brand to me, I’ve been using their Hair In The Sun UV protector for a few years now but for some reason I’d never thought to give the rest of their range of products a try, until now. The brand is eye catching, with its Scandi-minimal packaging and label. Their bottles are the sort you can confidently display in your bathroom, but don’t be fooled, it’s not style over substance, their products are very good.

Sachajuan have a few different products I could have chosen. They have products specifically for coloured, blonde, dry and really dry hair (they also have products for other hair types.) My primary focus, for now, is dryness so I chose the products that are targeted at really dry hair. I’ve been using a combination of six products: Intensive Repair Shampoo, Intensive Repair Conditioner, Hair Repair, Over Night Hair Repair, Leave In Conditioner & Intensive Hair Oil.

I’m always suspicious of people who say that they noticed a difference after using something just once. However, I have genuinely seen a dramatic change in the condition, feel and colour of my hair since I switched to Sachajuan two weeks ago. It’s now got more of the relaxed swishiness it had when I was younger. It feels much softer which has led me to keep touching it as I can’t believe it’s my hair. And, my highlights look a lot brighter and softer in tone.

All of their products contain their Ocean Silk Technology, a combination of active ingredients, sea algae, protein and minerals which boost moisture, repair split ends, reduce frizz, generally improve the condition of the hair and give it back its shine. They also all smell incredible.

Intensive Repair Shampoo & Intensive Repair Conditioner

A good shampoo and conditioner that leave my hair feeling clean but not stripped, soft but not weighed-down.

The Intensive Repair Shampoo is designed for people with damaged, porous, dry hair and/or hair exposed to the sun. My hair currently ticks all of these boxes. The shampoo gently washes the hair leaving it feeling clean but not stripped, and the conditioner leaves it feeling soft but not weighed-down. They also has UV protectants that penetrate the hair follicle, protecting it from future UV damage.

Hair Repair & Over Night Hair Repair

Although these two products sound similar they are slightly different, one you need to wash out and the other you can but don’t have to. They both work like a hair mask, giving your hair a little extra nourishment. I’ve found them both to be affective and have used one or both at least once a week, depending on which fits into my routine. The Hair Repair is a post-shampoo treatment that you leave on for up to 10 minutes before washing out. I give my hair a light towel dry before applying it. You don’t have to do this but I think it helps the product penetrate the hair more effectively. It heals split ends, is great if you struggle with frizz and generally improves the health and shine of your hair.

The Over Night Hair Repair is somewhere between a mask and a leave-in conditioner. After washing your hair in the evening, you apply the product from the ends up. You then sleep in it and, depending on your hair type, you can either leave it on or wash it out in the morning. It’s water-based so it doesn’t feel or make your hair greasy. It improves elasticity as well as strengthening the hair. There are two algae that play an important role, Rhodophycea which works on the inside and Chondrus Crispus which works on the outside.

Leave In Conditioner & Intensive Hair Oil

I’ve been using both the Leave In Conditioner and Intensive Hair Oil when drying my hair. It might sound like overkill but my hair is that dry that it can take it. After washing and towel drying my hair I spray the Leave In Conditioner all over and then apply just a small pump of the Intensive Hair Oil. I comb both through my hair before applying Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer. If my hair is still a little flyaway once it’s dry I use a tiny bit of the Intensive Hair Oil to smooth it down.

Shiseido Spa Milan

This post was created in collaboration with Shiseido Spa Milan.

Another highlight of my trip to Milan was a quick visit to the Shiseido Spa in the Excelsior Hotel Gallia, it’s right next to the Milano Centrale railway station. City centre spas are notoriously cramped in London but this was not the case in Milan; the Shisiedo Spa spans 1000sqm. I really enjoy visiting a good spa and by good I mean one with excellent facilities, at least one pool, and a passionate team of therapists. The Shiseido spa is set over two floors with a Calidarium, Himalayan salt room, ice drop, jacuzzi, steam room and indoor swimming pool. It was designed by Studio Marco Piva (who renovated the whole hotel in 2015) and was fitted by B&B Italia. Beautiful materials have been used throughout, combining tradition with innovation.

I was treated to a Perfect Purifying Facial, a signature Shiseido treatment, that’s designed to deep cleanse the skin whilst rehydrating it. During the hour long treatment my therapist used the Shiseido product range to tackle my skincare issues. My skin’s been playing up these last few months so it was a perfect facial for me, gentle but affective. It was wonderfully relaxing and the perfect way to end our trip to Milan. As everyone knows, flying is not great for the skin but the last couple of times I’ve flown back to London I’ve used it as an excuse to have a facial before I leave. One more time and I might have to make it a habit.

Tip: If you’re visiting a spa, plan and book your treatments at least one week in advance. It’s disappointing to arrive at a spa for the day only to find their treatments are all fully booked. It’s happened to me a couple of times.

Organic Bodycare For Sensitive Skin

Pai Skincare Skincare Gentle Genius Camellia & Bergamot Body Wash with Konjac Sponge* | Pai Skincare Comfrey & Calendula Calming Body Cream*

I once read that your skin is the largest organ of your body. It’s not something I’d really thought about before, always considering the skin to be just the bit that holds all your organs in place. As I learn to take better care of my body it makes sense to consider what it is I’m putting on it, not just on my face. If you use products that contain lots of nasties and are spreading them all over your skin then it’s pretty likely that you’re going to be absorbing a lot of them into your body.

I spend a lot of time researching skincare brands. Friends that I speak to IRL will know that I’m quite passionate about it, especially when I’m talking about a brand that’s organic. My friend Julia from Stylonylon suggested Pai Skincare to me a little while back, she’d met Sarah the founder and was super impressed with their products. (FYI Julia has amazing skin and has done for as long as I’ve known her.) They’re an organic skincare brand that specialise in products for sensitive skin. I admit, it took me a little while to give them a try but I wish it hadn’t. I’ve been using quite a few of their products over the last month and already have a few firm favourites.

I took a couple of Pai Skincare products with me to Croatia, a body wash and body cream. The Pai Skincare Gentle Genius Camellia & Bergamot Body Wash is a little bit different to most as it doesn’t contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), a synthetic compound that’s used in a lot of cleaning products (including laundry products). It’s an effective surfactant and foaming agent but it’s also an irritant and pollutant. As Pai Skincare specialise in products for those of us with sensitive skin they’ve chosen not to use it in their body wash. Instead they’ve come up with an ingenious way of creating a foam with the use of a konjac sponge, another product that’s really great for sensitive skin. I have got on so well with this product and have been continuing to use it since returning to London. I’ve also noticed that a little goes a long way with the use of the sponge.

The other product that I took with me was the Pai Skincare Comfrey & Calendula Calming Body Cream. This seemed particularly appropriate as I knew I was going to be in the sun and the calming properties of this cream would be perfect for soothing my skin at the end of the day. I didn’t take aftersun but used this instead. It has quite a thick texture which you need to pat all over to spread it before rubbing in (although I hear they’ve been revising the formula to make it more glossy). Apart from the very irritating mosquito bites I got in Croatia, my skin has been pretty happy.

The SPFs I’m Using This Summer

Guinot High Protection Sun Oil SPF 50* | Guinot High Protection Sun Spray SPF 30* | Caudalie Anti-Aging Face Suncare SPF 50* | Guinot Very High Protection Sun Cream SPF 50+* | Guinot Newhite Brightening UV Shield SPF 50* | Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil 250ml | Sachajuan Hair In The Sun* | Davina Mulford Panama Trilby with Beaded Black Band* (Now Closed)

Fortunately, we are far more aware of the need to wear sun protection than ever before. As a teenager I didn’t get it, I thought the only way I would tan would be to wear the lowest SPF, or nothing at all. Add to that, that my mum has never set a good example and still to this day I tell her to wear SPF and she ignores me. I’m now utterly convinced and wish I’d been more vigilant as a teenager. I can now see the damage I’ve done in the past and have been spending more and more time lately looking for ways to reverse the damage. My advice to those of you that are unsure of whether you need to, wear sunscreen! UVA rays cause ageing and wrinkles, whilst UVB rays cause redding and sunburn, they’re also a contributing factor in the development of skin cancer. This is why it’s important to wear broad spectrum sun protection as it will protect you from both.

This holiday I’ve been using some really great SPF products that I would highly recommend. On my body I’ve been using Guinot High Protection Sun Oil SPF 50. It’s a dry oil which means it’s absorbed quickly and you won’t be left feeling like an oil-slicked body builder, instead my skin has been left feeling nicely moisturised. It comes in a spray which is quite handy, a few spritzes all over, a light rub and you’re done. It’s also good for those hard to reach places like your back. It just doesn’t work upside-down. I’ve been covering myself every morning and then topping up throughout the day after a swim or just later on when I feel like I need it. I’ve used half a bottle in one week. And don’t be fooled into thinking that low SPF means you’ll tan quicker, I’ve been using SPF 50 and I’m still going brown, I’ve just not burnt once.

I’ve also been using Guinot High Protection Sun Spray SPF 30 when we head out in the afternoons. I think this is possibly my favourite although I’ve not used it as much due to the lower SPF. It’s a bit like a deodorant can but for sun protection. You can barely tell you’re wearing it and it’s so easy to use. My only concern is that it seems to go down quickly.

On my face I’ve been using two different SPFs by the pool, Caudalie Anti-Aging Face Suncare SPF 50 and Guinot Very High Protection Sun Cream SPF 50+. Both are really good, there’s not much in it. Neither leave your skin greasy or white, and both are quickly absorbed. My skin looks moisturised but not too shiny after using them. Whenever we’ve been out for the day I’ve used the Guinot Newhite Brightening UV Shield SPF 50 (which I wrote about in my last beauty post). It gives a little bit of coverage, evening out skin tone so I feel like I’m not completely bare skinned; I’m not a fan of wearing make-up in the heat.

I’ve been using a couple of hair protectors. I recently started using Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil – Heat/UV Protective Primer as a heat protector before using my hairdryer or styling tools. I noticed before I came away that it’s also a UV protector so it kills two birds with one stone; I love a multi-use product. I’d say it’s a light, pleasant smelling lotion rather than an oil. It goes on easily with the spray and doesn’t leave my hair greasy. The other product I’ve been using and have done for years is Sachajuan Hair In The Sun. You can apply it to wet or dry hair, I usually use it as a styling product to tame my hair in the evening after I’ve washed and dried it. So again, it’s a great two in one product.

And finally, I’ve been wearing this classic Panama from Davina Mulford! You might have seen it in a few of my photos on Instagram.

Guinot Harness The Brightening Power of Vitamin C

Guinot Perfect Brightening Cleansing Oil* | Guinot Vitamin C Brightening Serum* | Guinot Brightening UV Shield SPF50*

Vitamin C (AKA ascorbic acid) is nature’s miracle skin brightener, firmer and smoother. It’s a fantastic anti-oxidant that fights the effects of free-radicals that cause ageing and photo-damage, like hyperpigmentation. It’s also a key component in the production of collagen, the protein that holds skin together and gives it a firm smooth feel. It’s not a new discovery but for me, as I notice the affects of UV light and the ageing process on my skin, it’s become a key ingredient in the products I use.

Guinot uses vitamin C and melanoxyl (which slows down melanin production) in their Newhite range. It’s a line specifically aimed at people with uneven skin tone and/or hyperpigmentation. I’ve been trying out their Perfect Brightening Cleansing Oil, Vitamin C Brightening Serum and Brightening UV Shield SPF50. I got on very well with all the products and noticed that my skin was brighter quite quickly but I was especially fond of the UV Shield. It’s a white cream with tiny grey specks that once warmed in my hands adapts to my skin tone. It gives quite good coverage so I’ve been wearing it with just a slick of mascara on days when I’m at home or just popping to the shops. I really love a good multi-use product.

I used to wear SPF every day as it was in a lot of the products I used, until I changed a few and failed to notice that I was no longer covered. I’ve now gone back to using SPF religiously, again. It’s really important to use a high SPF when you’re trying to tackle uneven skin tone or hyperpigmentation. Melanocyte cells in the skin produce melanin in the skin when triggered by UV light. When your skin is exposed to it, even the dark spots that have previously faded will go darker again, unless you are constantly protecting your skin.

The Perfect Brightening Cleansing Oil is a thin oil, that goes on and spreads easily. We’re always told that opposites attract but that’s not always the case. The oil in this cleansing oil mixes with the oils in your skin, and then, once mixed with water, forms an emulsion which is easily removed. It’s a gentle way of cleansing the skin and removing make-up without stripping it.

Guinot’s Vitamin C Brightening Serum is a lightweight serum that is quickly absorbed. It comes in a small pump with a separate vial of pure vitamin C powder. When you are ready to start using the serum, you break the seal on the vial and pour the powder into the serum, shake it vigorously and then start to use. The vitamin C comes separately so that it stays as active as possible. Ideally you want to use the serum over a period of 14 days, this is when it is most active and will have the greatest effect.

Remember to use the Brightening UV Shield SPF50 after everything else, as your skin will be more sensitive to UV damage.
