Chilly Spring Layers

In spring it’s so hard to know what to wear. I left the house yesterday in a black t-shirt, skinny jeans and mohair cardigan only to discover it was just a bit too chilly to be out without a coat. I opt for layers when the weather is hard to read. I pick out non-bulky pieces that work well together, even when you discard one of them. Keeping the palette of my wardrobe quite simple and neutral gives me lots of options for layering. I’ll quite often layer a wool coat over this denim jacket or my black leather biker, two essentials most people have in their wardrobe, and then wear either a t-shirt or shirt underneath. I love a layered look visually too, there’s a depth to this type of look that makes it feel much more complete.

Miró Hotel, Bilbao

This post was created in collaboration with the Miró Hotel.

We were really lucky to stay at the Miró Hotel whilst in Bilbao, it’s a lovely boutique hotel, opposite the Guggenheim. The hotel was designed by fashion designer Antonio Miró and interior designer Pilar Líbano and was the first boutique hotel in Bilbao.

The service was brilliant from the moment we arrived. Having arrived much earlier than I’d anticipated our room wasn’t ready for us, so we handed over our luggage for safe keeping and were handed complimentary tickets for the Guggenheim. This was such a nice touch and made my day as we already had plans to visit. On the ground floor of the hotel there’s a lounge area with free coffee and soft drinks, and lots of design books as well as photography by Marc Viaplana. We sat down there and started to plan our afternoon, the Guggenheim to see the amazing Richard Serra exhibition, followed by a wander and lunch before returning to the hotel to relax. We were booked into the hotel’s Aqua Wellness centre, a private room with a steam room, hydromassage bath and hydromassage shower, for an hour before we got ready to go out for the evening. This was the perfect way to relax into our break and I would recommend it if you’re planning a stay at the Miró Hotel.

Our room was decorated neutrally, creating a calming oasis to escape to for a couple of hours whilst we got ready. It even had a view of the Guggenheim. The bathroom was all slick black marble, very chic and just my style.

Breakfast was worth having at the hotel, ‘The Brown Bread Bag’ came with slices of brioche, German style bread, rustic white bread and a croissant, served with delicious raspberry jam and marmalade. All had been chosen from local producers for their quality. I also had a rather wonderful bowl of crunchy granola and yoghurt.

A Weekend In Bilbao

I’ve wanted to go to Bilbao and visit the Guggenheim since I was at school and first came across the work of architect Frank Gehry. I’ve waited a long time to see it but it was utterly worth it, the building is stunning, glinting silver in the bright light and pale gold when it’s cloudy. We stayed just opposite the Guggenheim in the Miró Hotel, the first boutique hotel in Bilbao (more on the hotel later).

Bilbao is the perfect destination for a weekend break, it’s easy to get to, small enough to walk around and has lots of amazing places to eat. We headed to the Plaza Nueva in the east of Bilbao for dinner, the square has many pinxtos bars where you’re hard pressed to spend 10€ on two glasses of wine and a selection of pinxtos. I recommend taking cash as we found many of the bars frowned on using bank cards for anything less than 10€. Our favourite was Victor Montes in the south-east corner of the square, the food was very good and the service came with a smile.

Whilst in Bilbao I had to check out a few shops, of course. Trimmer is a small boutique in the centre of town which sells a lot of my favourite brands including Masscob, Spain’s answer to Isabel Marant. They sell both men’s and women’s brands, as well as a good selection of magazines, beauty products and flowers. Next door they have a café too. Another wonderful store to visit is Narata, a contemporary design showroom that works with local artists and designers, as well as well-known brands like SCP, Muuto and Hay. The owners Aristide and Ainara are very welcoming and clearly passionate about the people they work with. It’s worth popping in just to see they’re collaborative project, ‘NarataWorks’; the leaning lamps above are from this project.

Val-d’Isère was the perfect place to test out Ille De Coco‘s wonderful warm knits. Their roll-neck tunic (made with soft merino wool) kept every bit of me warm and cosy. There was no need for a scarf as the roll-neck comes up high and is quite a snug fit around the neck. I love this tunic, it was just so perfect for the weather in the resort and made so well. I’ll definitely be taking lots of their chunky knits with me next time I go skiing. I’m usually drawn to clothing that isn’t appropriate for a ski resorts (note the Stan Smiths I’m wearing in these photos) but on this occasion I found something appropriate that I really wanted to wear.

I also wore my favourite woolly hat which sadly has now sold out. If you’ve got your eye on one, given they were so popular, I’m sure they’ll be back in stock next autumn.

I love being in the mountains, I grew up skiing from a young age (I was first put on skis at three) and have always found the fresh air, sun (when it’s out), and all-day exercise makes me feel so good. Being in such beautiful surroundings also helps. I’ve been going to Val-d’Isère in France regularly since I was 14, it’s such a great area to ski as it’s joined to Tignes forming the Espace Killy. We were so lucky to be staying in a ski-in ski-out chalet this time, oh the luxury of not carrying skis around.

I found just the right jacket for our holiday for après-ski, G-LAB make functional outerwear so their jackets and coats are technically perfect. They also look and feel really good. The Bellevue has an inner jacket and collar that you can remove in warmer weather but with temperatures below freezing there was no chance of me taking it out. In these photos I’m just wearing a long-sleeve t-shirt under the jacket and was fine.

Fewer, Better Things

What Is Slow Fashion?

Slow fashion is the antithesis of fast fashion, it’s a backlash against cheap labour, poor quality, environmental damage and unnecessary consumerism. It’s about buying well-made products that will be used again and again until they finally fall apart and can’t be mended, or (with beauty products) you have scraped the last drop from the pot. More is not always better, certainly not for the environment and the welfare of factory workers around the world. And more can mean harder decisions for you every day.

When I go into a shop and try on clothes I don’t just look to see how they fit, I look for good craftsmanship and quality materials, whether they’re organic and where they’ve been made. I want to know as much as possible about a product and where it comes from before I commit to investing in the company that’s made it. Every time you buy from a brand that’s what you’re doing, saying that you want to give them your money to keep doing what they are doing, and that you approve of what they are doing.

Why not invest in brands that are not only making something beautiful but also doing something that’s good for the world. Knowing which brands are isn’t always that obvious so my research often starts before I leave home. Slow fashion brands are not trend lend, they look to create something that is timeless and often classic. They tend to be the brands that create wardrobe basics and essentials.

It was time for comfort on LFW Day 4, out came my favourite white bomber jacket by incredible British designer, Jonathan Saunders. This beauty rarely comes out as I’m paranoid about getting it dirty but it felt like the right occasion. As it was a bit chilly I layered a gorgeous silk shirt dress by the talented silk magician Marina London over some straight-leg jeans. These ones by Samsoe & Samsoe fit me so perfectly, they’re non-stretch, mid-rise, in a blue wash that’s not too rinsed. I finished off the look with my best white trainers, that’s right, the Woman by Common Projects got another outing even though it was raining a little, I’m such a risk taker.

For LFW Day 3 this season I wore a full look from La Redoute, whilst I took over their Instagram for the day (I hope you followed along). I have always loved French women’s style, they always look effortlessly stylish and I’ve tried my best to do the same for this look. I wore a khaki tailored coat from from La Redoute’s recent collaboration with luxury French fashion house, Carven. Evoking a little of my favourite French designer Isabel Marant, I chose a cream boho blouse with a high ruffle collar, delicate embroidery and wide bell sleeves. The flatforms were a great decision for Fashion Week, they gave me a few essential centimetres whilst also being very comfortable. I actually ended up wearing them a couple of times during LFW.

I’m so sorry I haven’t been posting as regularly as usual. I’ve been on two trips, had London Fashion Week (LFW) and a broken hard-drive, all in the space of a month. I do, however, have lots of content to share with you.

First up is my outfit for LFW Day 1, I went for an almost all navy look with a touch of nude. I know from experience that this is not the time to start embracing 10 cm high heels so I wore these cool flatforms from French brand La Redoute. The first day of LFW is always the busiest one for me so I needed a pair of shoes that would still be comfortable whilst I dashed around Soho.

It was not the warmest of days so I opted for a warm high-neck sweater from Danish favourite Samsøe & Samsøe and some incredible pleated, cropped trousers from Maison Scotch. They remind me of the Yohji Yamamoto ones that Herb Ritts photographed David Bowie wearing back in the 80s.

Oi, Oi, Sailor!

Long Sleeve Round Neck T-Shirt* | Isabel Marant Étoile Davan Boyfriend Jeans | Saint James Mariner Cap | Jimmy Choo Rebel in Leopard Print | Adidas Originals Stan Smith Trainers c/o MonShowroom* | Jenny Sweetnam Drop Ring/Necklace*

Isabel Marant manage to inspire at least one new trend every season, for AW15 it’s definitely been about the mariner cap, their Evie cap from the Étoile diffusion line has nearly sold out everywhere. Not willing to pay the price to have one sent over from the States I opted to buy mine from the classic Breton brand Saint James, quite possibly the inspiration for Marant’s version.

I’ve styled my mariner cap with a new pair of Isabel Marant Étoile boyfriend jeans which have a contrasting dark denim strip down the side, a denim take on a tuxedo trouser. I’m also wearing a classic navy blue coat from Danish brand Samsøe & Samsøe, who also made my pale grey jumper. And the plain white tee is by a brand that specialise in organic cotton t-shirts, The White T-Shirt Co. (more on them later).

Nixon Watch Customisation

Recently, I was invited by Nixon to pop into their new UK store in London’s Covent Garden. If you’re not familiar with Nixon, their background is immersed in boardsports and more specifically the California skate and surf scene. The store on Neal Street is very small but the interiors were so cleverly conceived and executed by the designers, Checkland Kindleysides, that they have created a store that has something interesting to see wherever you look. From the undulating wave of watch stands to the blue lighting you are reminded of the sea. A room of skateboard decks cleverly hides various watches allowing the team to make a different display every day.

The Nixon watch customisation bar brings the brand’s ethos to life “Team Designed, Custom Built”. Whilst at the store I was given the chance to customise my own watch. I chose The Time Teller, of the three watches available to customise it’s the one with the smallest case; the other two are The Sentry and The 48-20. It’s possible to start with any part of the watch, I chose the strap as I knew immediately which one I liked the most. You could start with the case, dial, strap or even the crown (the little knob on the side of the watch case). Through trial and error I went through a couple of cases, crowns and faces, and then decided upon what I feel is the ultimate combination, it’s very minimal and perfect for wearing everyday. The customisation doesn’t stop there, another little bonus is that you can personalise the back of the case with laser engraving.

Let’s Play

Comme Des Garçons Play Long-Sleeve Stripe T-Shirt | COS Black Mohair & Wool Cardigan | Cheap Monday Thrift Destroyed Boyfriend Jeans (brand since closed) | Adidas Originals Stan Smith Trainers c/o MonShowroom* | CF Concept Tusk Necklace in Gold | Grey Fedora (found on Portobello Road) | Vintage Black Leather Belt (found on eBay)

The Comme Des Garçons Play collection is brilliant; stripe t-shirts and shirts, plain white tees, cute cardigans and jumpers, and (their collaboration with Converse) Chuck Taylor plimsolls, all embellished with the iconic Play heart. I bought my stripe t-shirt in Paris from the Comme Des Garçons Play shop in Le Marais, whilst there for Paris Fashion Week last October. It was on my wish list for ages and I’m so glad I have one of my own at last. Be warned, they come up small in size, so go one up from your usual size; I was lucky that the girls in the store warned me. I’ve kept the styling simple and casual for this look but it would look equally cool with a suit.

I’ve also broken out some new white kicks! My old Stan Smiths were starting to look a bit grubby. Ahhh, I love a fresh pair of trainers.

Not So Common, Yet

For Christmas, my fiancé very kindly bought me a pair of Common Projects! I became aware of this understated trainer brand about a year ago and I’d been dying for a pair ever since. They are very minimal in design, no stripes, no mention of the brand name, just ten digits on the side stamped in gold – a style reference, the European size and a colour reference.

Common Projects is not a new brand but it’s only just started to resonate with women, helped on by the support of Net-a-Porter. The company was started by Peter Poopat and Flavio Girolami, they launched their first collection in 2004. The womens collection, Woman by Common Projects, didn’t launch until 2009. Their slow rise to fame may have something to do with their cost, at nearly 4 times that of Stan Smiths, they’re not a cheap option but what you get is a beautiful, comfortable trainer made in Italy from premium Italian leather.

Grey & Navy Essentials

Samsøe & Samsøe Kahlia Coat in Light Grey Melange | Alexander Wang Grey Asymmetric Draped Sweater | Lemaire x UNIQLO Rayon Wide Leg Trousers in Navy | Adidas Originals Stan Smith Trainers | PB 0110 Half-Moon Bag in Navy | CF Concept Tusk Necklace in Gold | Ace & Tate Sebastian Sunglasses in Bio Black*

As I’ve mentioned more than once, I’ve really gotten into navy and grey this season. It’s such an easy combination and always looks great.

I really wanted to find a good grey coat this winter, something versatile that would work with 90% of my wardrobe. Grey is an easy neutral colour to wear and works with every other colour, which makes it a perfect wardrobe essential. This one is from the Danish brand, Samsøe & Samsøe. It’s made from a wool blend and great for layering in winter or over a t-shirt come spring.

Style&Minimalism x Ille De Cocos Part IV

Ille De Cocos Merino Roll Neck Rib Sweater in Dark Grey Marl | Lemaire x UNIQLO Rayon Wide Leg Trousers in Navy | Topshop Herringbone Chambray Shirt in Pale Blue | PB 0110 Half-Moon Bag in Navy | Adidas Originals Stan Smith Trainers | Jenny Sweetnam Statement Earring

I’m wearing Ille De Cocos‘ amazing grey roll-neck again but this time with a more casual look, with loose trousers and trainers. Roll-necks are so versatile and an essential in any winter wardrobe. I felt so warm and comfortable in this one. The knit has a springy feel, so whilst it’s chunky and warm, it’s also easy to move around in.

I chose a loose bun for this look so I could show off this incredible statement earring by one of my favourite London jewellery designers Jenny Sweetnam, a very talented lady. Sophia made it look so easy, I always think my hair is so difficult to work with but she said otherwise, so it just goes to show it just takes practise.

As with the other looks from my styling collaboration with Ille de Cocos, you’ll find them on their website.

A Perfect Shirt (Part I)

Baukjen Teresa Cotton Shirt* | Samsøe & Samsøe Hoff Coat Hat in Sand Grey | Topshop Cigarette Trousers in Black | Sekonda Seksy Leather Strap Watch in Blush* | Whistles Cornel Suede Point Pump in Black | Ace & Tate Nina Glasses in Autumn Leaves* | Fedora Hat (from a small shop on Portobello Road)

I own a few shirts, they’re a weakness of mine but with good reason, I tend to wear them a lot. If I’m wearing a shirt I don’t feel scruffy, even when I’m going for a casual look. They also reflect the androgynous style to which I’m so often drawn. They’re the foundation pieces of many of my outfits, and it’s taken me years to find shirts that work for my style and shape.

Baukjen are a brand that I often turn to for shirts. The fabrics they use are soft on the skin and hang beautifully. The cut is well-tailored across the shoulders but not too fitted around the chest and stomach, they have that borrowed from the boyfriend feel but without completely swamping you.

I’ve styled two of my favourites which you can find in their current sale, the Teresa cotton shirt (which I’m wearing in this post) and the Coco chambray shirt which I’ll be sharing in my next post. I will be wearing these all year round as they’re season-less styles. The Teresa, with its longer length, will also make the perfect beach cover-up.

The Ex Nihilo Demi-Bespoke Experience

I recently had the opportunity to try the Ex Nihilo demi-bespoke experience. It’s rare to be able to encounter such a unique perfume consultation, not because the 6th floor of Harrods is a restricted shopping zone but because the experience itself is unlike any other. Your senses are overwhelmed in a measured way. To begin with, you walk into a small gallery with walls painted Jardin Majorelle blue (just like Yves Saint Laurent’s gardens in Morocco), this is Ex Nihilo’s signature colour.

You would be forgiven for thinking for a minute that you have stumbled upon a pop-up homewares section of Harrods and that the gold-tone metal and Carrara marble units would look perfect in your home, and then you notice what resembles a chemistry lab at the far end of the room. This is the work of Christophe Pillet, his deft skill had me dying to take the whole boutique home with me.

After taking in the vivid blue, marble and metal, you notice some strange blocks on your right, part see through, part opaque, they look like flasks of some sort. This is where the magic truly begins. These objects are not flasks but Vase de Senteurs, a device that delivers dry capsules of each of Ex Nihilio’s unusual core fragrances. Why dry you ask? Well without the alcohol and water your senses are not overwhelmed by each scent which allows you to smell as many as you like.

Once you’ve chosen a scent from the Vase de Senteurs it’s onto trying the fragrance on your skin. All fragrances react with your skin making them unique when you wear them. I chose Vetiver Moloko, described as ‘a racy woody fragrance wrapped in a creamy and enveloping veil’. I tend to wear fragrances that are not overtly feminine and this combination of bergamot, Bulgarian rose, cypress, milky accord, vetiver, amyris and Madagscar vanilla forms the most beautiful and exquisite scent that could be worn by both a man or a woman; all the fragrances have been created like this although some are definitely more suited to one or the other.

If you want something a little more unique there’s a third step, the Ex Nihilo demi-bespoke experience. Sitting down at the marble bench towards the back of the boutique you’re presented with lots of little atomisers and to the side six small glass bottles which contain six of the world’s finest raw ingredients; Orange Flower Absolute from Morocco, Rose Centifolia from France, Bourbon Vanilla from Madagascar, Sandlewood from Australia, Pallida Iris Absolute from France and Grandiflorum Jasmine Absolute from India. These are the six raw ingredients that can be combined with each of Ex Nihilo’s fragrances to create a demi-bespoke fragrance. In each of the atomisers is the original fragrance and the three best combinations, each with one of the raw ingredients added (not all combine perfectly). I rather unexpectedly liked the Bourbon Vanilla and Vetiver Moloko combination most, my past experiences with vanilla have not been positive ones due to their poor quality but this is the best vanilla in the world. In order to create the perfect balance of ingredients Ex Nihilo have created a high-precision dosing machine called the Osmologue. Whilst you watch your demi-bespoke perfume(s) are created before your eyes. There’s also the option to personalise your bottle cap with mother of pearl, onyx, horn or leather. If you select all three variations of your original perfume you can have them presented in a beautiful case, subtly decorated with a geometric pattern that references the Ex Nihilo logo.

The whole experience left my senses overwhelmed and excited. If you’re still looking for a unique present for a special someone this would be an extraordinary gift.

Winter Skincare Tips with Antipodes

Although the weather so far this winter has been pretty mild I’ve still felt the need to ramp up my skincare routine to compensate for the wind, changes in temperature and home heating. These three can play havoc with my skin so I tend to use more moisturising products that will help prepare and protect it at this time of the year.

Earlier this year I discovered a new skincare brand called Antipodes (back in May I wrote a post about their Aura Manuka Honey Mask). If, like me, you’re a fan of Aesop you are going to love Antipodes. The products are made with bioactive plant ingredients and are certified organic and approved for vegetarians. I love using their rich moisturising mask so I thought they might be a good place to start when looking for products that would be deeply moisturising and without any nasties. Once again I’ve been very impressed.

Hosanna H2O Intensive Skin-Plumping Serum

Serums might mean another step in your skincare routine but I can assure you it’s not one you’ll regret. This is my favourite of the four products I tried, the results were instantaneous. It does exactly what it says it will, my skin felt plumped from the first use. It has a nice texture and is absorped very fast.

Rejoice Light Facial Day Cream

This moisturiser is actually a lot richer than I was expecting from the name but again it’s quickly absorped. A little goes along way, it spreads easily. Carry this one around in your bag for a moisture hit during the day.

Joyous Protein-Rich Night Replenish Serum

The Joyous night serum is a lot more oily than the Skin-Plumping serum. It’s actually more of a rich and luscious oil. After your evening cleanse, pat this over your face avoiding your eyes. Give it a few minutes and then use the next product or your favourite night cream.

Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream

Antipodes’ Nourishing Night Cream has a slightly unusual but not unpleasant scent. It’s super rich and has been doing great things to my skin overnight. I wake up without fearing what I’ll find in the mirror. My skin has been well nourished and appears a lot more even in texture and tone.

Sprekenhus Essentials

I don’t tend to judge beauty products by their packaging but it certainly makes them more appealing when you come across the sort of products you want to have on show in your bathroom. It was the minimal design of Sprekenhus’ products that initially caught my eye but when I delved deeper it turned out that the packaging was just the icing on the cake.

Sprekenhus is a Norwegian natural hair care, organic skin care, perfume and body care brand, founded by Alexander Sprekenhus. Like a lot of the best products, his came about after encountering a problem, he wanted to “gain control over my curly, frizzy hair”. With no background in the beauty industry Sprekenhus has learned a lot along the way and has developed some pretty affective products. The three I’ve been using do exactly what they promise to do, rare in an oversaturated industry where the packaging is so often the best thing about a product.

I’ve been using the Hair Styling Elixir after I wash my hair when it’s damp but not wet, before blow drying it, and then also as a finishing product. The Argan oil based elixir is quite viscous, a couple of drops is enough for my hair. It’s now much smoother and shinier, and honestly looks so much healthier.

In addition to the elixir, I’ve been using Sprekenhus’ Hydrating Mask, a once-a-week hair treatment. It’s really thick but a small amount spreads easily to coat all the hair strands. Leaving it on my hair for 5 minutes leaves it silky and tangle-free (although my hair is rarely knotty).

My hair has been in much better shape since using these two products and I wholeheartedly recommend them to you, especially if you have fine, dry, highlighted hair like mine.

As you are probably aware by now oils are my favourite type of hair and beauty products, and I feel like I’m becoming quite the connoiseur, well from a user perspective at least. When it comes to body oils I look for a product that is moisturising, quickly absorbed and has a nice scent. The Sprekenhus Body Oil is all of these, although for some the scent might be a little bit rich. I’ve only used it as a body moisturiser so far but it can also be used for massage and in the bath.

You can find out more about Sprekenhus here.

Golden Summer Legs

This post was created in collaboration with Urban Outfitters and Philips.

Fig + Yarrow Sea Scrub* | Fig + YarrowYarrow Buttercream* | Philips Lumea Comfort* | Madame La La Self Tan Mousse in Light* | Samsøe & Samsøe Moffa White Shirt

I find that getting my legs out during the first days of a holiday can be a bit daunting if they’ve not seen much sunshine. Ahead of my trip to the South of France I tested out a few products given to me by Urban Outfitters, to help give the illusion of golden summer legs so I felt more comfortable and confident in my summer dresses; I swear a tan can make you look a little bit slimmer.

I started by preparing my skin, giving it a really good scrub with Fig + Yarrow’s Sea Scrub every 2-3 days for a couple of weeks before we left. I kept it in the shower so it was easy to add to my morning routine. This particular scrub is a mix of salt and oils so is both exfoliating and moisturising, it left my legs super soft. It doesn’t smell like the sea as you might think from the name, it just harnesses the sea’s wonderful minerals. Even though the scrub did a great job of moisturising I still followed it with a rich body butter, also by Fig + Yarrow. Their Yarrow Buttercream is absorbed quickly and left my skin feeling nourished. The yarrow scent reminds me of walks in the Dorset countryside.

I usually epilate my legs every 1-2 weeks but when I read about Philips‘ Lumea products I was intrigued. It uses flashes of light to put the hair follicles to sleep and over time thins and slows hair growth. You start by using it just after you shave but as I don’t shave I epilated and then gave it a go to see if that would work too. Initially you’re told to wait two weeks until your second use, so when fine hairs started to appear one week in I went back to my epilator to keep my legs fluff free. I was actually really surprised to find that there were far fewer hairs already and they were much finer. If you want to know how I’m getting on in a few weeks feel free to tweet me.

The pièce de la résistance to getting my legs honey brown without the sunshine was Madame La La’s Self Tan Mousse. Latex gloves are essential when applying the mousse, it dries quickly and deepens in colour with each layer, so you have to blend it quickly. The coconut water gives it a pleasant scent initially but within a few hours it does have that coco butter smell often associated with self-tans. After waiting 5 minutes you can get dressed but you’re advised not to shower for 10 hours. I’m so pleased with the results, my fiancé even commented on my legs, noticing how much browner they were.

Aesop Daily Essentials

I test out a lot of amazing skincare products, these two are my Aesop daily essentials and have remained a constant in my skincare arsenal for about six months, taking me seamlessly from winter into summer.

My skin is normal to dry and both these products are perfect for it. The Fabulous Face Cleanser is a gentle foaming cleanser that cleans the skin without stripping away every natural oil it produces; it also removes my eye make-up. The Camellia Nut Hydrating Facial Cream is quite rich but not heavy and is quickly absorbed by my skin; when it’s feeling a bit dehydrated I top it up with another layer 10-15 minutes later.

The little black glass candle was a gift from the lovely people at Sandro. Even when it’s not lit it gives off a wonderful scent. I’ll get a waft every now and then, look round to see who’s walked in the room that smells so good, and then realise that there’s no one there.

Sunday Morning Rituals

What Sunday’s are all about, some light reading and a very good face mask. Face masks are amazing and I often forget what wonders they work on my skin. I know I should be using them once a week but the reality is more like once a month.

Urban Outfitters have recently added beauty to their offering and I’ve been impressed with the products I’ve tried so far. This mask by New Zealand brand Antipodes is pretty spectacular as moisturising masks go. Following the instructions, I smoothed a thick layer over my face and left it for 15 minutes; the results were incredible, I couldn’t stop touching my face, smooth as could be and intensely hydrated.

If you haven’t picked up, read or even seen a copy of How To Be Parisian where have you been? It’s a wonderful book full of Parisienne idiosyncrasies, not a book to be taken too seriously but if you’ve ever wondered how those Parisiennes create that unique mystique they all seem to have, this book divulges all.

You might remember that I included Antigua in my Travel Bucket List in January, well we made it and wow, it was amazing. It’s such a beautiful island and the people there are so kind and friendly. As you might expect from a Caribbean island, the vibe is super relaxed and this hits you straightaway. I’ve even brought a little back with me, driving and walking around yesterday I realised I wasn’t in a hurry like I usually am in London; I’m not sure how long this will last but let’s see.

We spent the first couple of days partying with our friends in the lead up to their wedding and then we partied some more to celebrate. The wedding was held at The Carlisle Bay, a luxury resort with tasteful decor, lush surroundings and a gentle breeze off the sea. I was teary eyed throughout the ceremony (I’m awful for this at my friends’ weddings) but pulled myself together soon afterwards. The tipple of the night was a delicious old fashioned rum punch which helped us dance the night away, barefoot in the sand. It was a wedding I won’t forget anytime soon.

Shirley Heights the night after the wedding was worth the crazy 45 minute taxi ride across the island (be warned taxi drivers either drive very slowly or very fast along the hole-ridden roads). We were welcomed with stunning views, steel drums and the smell of the most incredible barbeque.

We stayed at the Cocobay Resort, in a beautiful setting on a small cliff overlooking the sea; surrounded by cacti, banana plants and palms. Our little waterfront cottage had everything we needed, including an outside bath, hammock and plunge pool. Pelicans flew past our balcony just a few metres away and the bright blue sea spread-out wide in front of us.

Both Dan and I are foodies (he’s a classically trained chef) so we insisted on trying a few local delicacies, conch and dumplings, both of which could be found a short walk along the beach from our resort. The conch came in the form of fritters which were served with a sweet tamarind sauce at a beach restaurant called The Nest, they were so good; they also served a mean coconut shrimp. We sampled dumplings (by special request) at Dennis Restaurant. They were served with salt fish and pickled coleslaw; I enjoyed them but wouldn’t be in a hurry to have them again. Whilst we’re talking about food, Sheer Rocks is a must, their coconut fish stew was heavenly.

All photos were taken with my new Olympus PEN E-PL7 which was given to me by Fashiolista and Olympus. I’m genuinely in love with this camera, it’s been so easy to pick up and use. If you’re a blogger, I’d recommend it.

Mama Shelter, Paris

I spent last weekend in Paris and I had the best time, I love it! I’ve been quite a few times before but this trip was truly fantastic. I stayed at Mama Shelter in the 20th arrondissment, a great location for jumping on the Metro to pop to Le Marais – now my favourite area in Paris. The hotel was designed by French designer and enfant terrible, Philippe Starck. For me it was a bit like a more quirky Shoreditch House, super comfortable and relaxing but with some crazy details, like the Darth Vader bedside lamps.

There was a real party vibe in the hotel whilst I was there, possibly due to Men’s Fashion Week or maybe just because it was the weekend. There’s a roof terrace that I will have to pop back in the summer to check out and downstairs there’s a bar and pizzeria.

Every room has an iMac which you can use to watch a good selection of free films, I had one playing whenever I was in my room, and also to connect to the free wi-fi. Although the rooms are quite small there was enough space for me but maybe I would have spent less time in it had there been two of us. The beds were really comfortable and having a double bed to myself, for once, meant spreading out in all directions, heaven.

More on Paris later…
